WWE will be wrapping up the calendar year and holiday season soon, however the company will be doing so different from the past this year for what has been a bizarre 2020, but not for reasons you might assume!
This year, Christmas and New Year’s falls on a Friday, which of course is when the company normally airs their weekly Friday Night SmackDown television program live from the WWE ThunderDome.
In most years, the company tapes shows that fall around the holidays in advance so that wrestlers and staff could enjoy the time off, especially after 2017 when they decided to hold live shows and it was met with a lot of internal criticism.
The plan this year is to tape the final Friday Night SmackDown episode of the year in advance, likely on Wednesday, December 23, 2020, along with that week’s WWE NXT show.
The company would then turn around the following week to kick off the new year with a live episode of Friday Night SmackDown on New Year’s Day on Friday, January 1, 2021.
A few days later, the first special event for their black-and-gold brand of the new year will take place.
As seen on the company’s television and official social media / digital platforms this week, the full promotional push has started for the WWE NXT “New Year’s Evil” show scheduled for Wednesday, January 6, 2021 on the USA Network.
We will keep you posted here at eWrestling.com as updates continue to surface regarding WWE’s plans for their holiday / year-end schedule for 2020, as well as news and notes on how the company will ring in the new year of 2021.
