— AEW CEO Tony Khan appeared on WGN Radio where he spoke of the upcoming PPV Forbidden Door and AEW Dynamite both this week and next and one of the topics he heavily praised was the promotion’s women’s division and the two title matches set for the PPV. First about the matches at Forbidden Door:
“I think two of the greatest women’s championship matches ever on the same card. To have the AEW Women’s World Champion, ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm – an icon of the cinema and pro wrestling ring – taking on Mina Shirakawa in a match that the fans absolutely want to see and a great story that’s been developing between Toni, Mina and their shared love for Mariah May who will be in both women’s corner for this match.”
“And to have the TBS Champion, the face of the channel, Mercedes Mone, the biggest free agent signing in the history of women’s pro wrestling and one of the biggest free agent signings ever in wrestling, came to AEW, has won the TBS Championship, is the face of our channel and now she’s going to take on one of the top international wrestlers, Stephanie Vaquer, who is not only a great wrestler for CMLL and she’s also the New Japan Strong champion. It’s title for title, winner take all, both titles on the line.”
— And then he lauded the current women’s division in AEW:
“We have a great group of women’s wrestlers. I think right now across the board everyone thinks this is by far the best wrestling in the history of AEW in the women’s division and I think we have the best women’s wrestling in the world right now.”
“There’s more competition and more talent in the AEW women’s division than there’s ever been, and more big matches. I think by far 2024 has been the best year of the AEW women’s division and I give so much of the credit to ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm the World Champion and Mercedes Mone the TBS Champion and a lot of other great wrestlers like Kris Statlander, Willow Nightingale, both former TBS champions. So many great things happening and I believe this is by far the best women’s wrestling we’ve ever had.”
