AEW Dynamite Results (4/1/2020): April Fool’s Day Closed Set Show

All Elite Wrestling returns with their weekly television program, as the promotion runs their third consecutive “closed set” edition of AEW Dynamite tonight.

Featured below are complete results of the Wednesday, April 1, 2020 episode of AEW Dynamite.

Cody & Tony Schiavone Kick Off The Show

This week’s show opens up from the closed set with Tony Schiavone and Cody on commentary welcoming us to the program. “The American Nightmare” and Schiavone run down some of the action scheduled for tonight, including the debut of the new tag-team The Natural Nightmares — Dustin Rhodes and QT Marshall with Brandi Rhodes, as well as “The Murderhawk Monster” Lance Archer with Jake “The Snake” Roberts.

Trent vs. Kenny Omega

Dasha Gonzalez, our ring announcer for tonight, introduces Trent of The Best Friends. He comes to the ring accompanied by Chuck Taylor and “Freshly Squeezed” Orange Cassidy. Trent battles Kenny Omega in our opening bout.

The AEW Tag-Team Champion (along with “Hangman” Page) and AAA Mega Champion makes his way to the ring and here we go with our first contest of the evening. Cody tells us that the two shaking hands just now before getting started is a sign of respect in addition to a silent agreement that these two are gonna “go for it” and “empty the tank” in this one.

And they’re doing exactly that as soon as the action gets going. With the quiet atmosphere, you can hear Omega and Trent laying their shots in with some extra “umf.” Omega is blasting Trent with kicks and strong strikes and chops as Schiavone promises another medical update on Nick Jackson later in the show.

Omega runs into an elbow from Trent in the corner. The Best Friends member follows up with a double stomp and a springboard moonsault from the middle rope onto Omega on the floor. Omega ends up recovering and hitting a tope suicida that takes out all of The Best Friends. The ref, Aubrey Edwards, checks in on the condition of the guys after the high spots to the floor.

Now we see Omega asking for a hug, the same way Trent did after his big spot to the floor. As the action resumes in the ring, it is Omega who is comfortably in the offensive driver’s seat. We head to a mid-match commercial.

When we return we see the action still going in the ring, as Omega and Trent are in the middle of exchanging punches as the small “crowd” of people at ringside react to each one, making some decent noise for the television broadcast.

Meanwhile, Omega and Trent continue to exchange offensive holds and strikes with no one establishing control until Trent blasts Omega with a pile-driver for a near fall. Cody points out on commentary that we are 15 minutes into this match, which has an announced 20-minute time limit.

Omega fights his way back into the lead, as it looks like he was going for a V-Trigger but he ends up hitting a snap-dragon suplex on Trent for a near fall. Trent turns the tide with a big lariat. Omega reverses a move attempt by Trent for a power-bomb. He follows it up with a V-Trigger. Trent is down after getting blasted by that shot as The Best Friends run over to check on him.

A fatigued Omega struggles to get to his feet and he does, as Trent meets him outside the ropes where the two exchange chops and strikes on the ring apron. Dasha Gonzalez checks in on the house mic and informs us that two minutes remain in the bout. Cody points out AEW is trending worldwide on Twitter. Trent with a running knee-strike for a close near fall. At the one minute warning mark, Omega gets the One-Winged Angel for the victory. Excellent opening contest here on AEW Dynamite. The two shake hands as Omega’s music plays and Cody and Tony put over their match on commentary.

Winner: Kenny Omega

Matt Hardy & Chris Jericho Video Package

As Tony and Cody finish up their props for Omega and Trent, they talk some about the debut of Matt Hardy to AEW and his decision to join The Elite in their upcoming battle against Chris Jericho and The Inner Circle in the first-ever AEW Blood & Guts match. After the video package finishes up, we head to another commercial break.

Hikaru Shida vs. Anna Jayy

A brief Hikaru Shida promotional vignette airs as we return to AEW Dynamite out of the commercial break. From there, Cody and Tony welcome us back to the show as Shida makes her ring entrance while her music plays in the closed set arena.

Already in the ring is Shida’s opponent, a wrestler making her AEW Dynamite debut in the AEW women’s division, Anna Jayy (with two “J’s).

The bell sounds and here we go. Shida jumps off to an early lead, but it doesn’t last long as the AEW newcomer Jayy quickly fights her way into the match, delivering a decent showing for a couple of minutes before Shida scores the pin to earn her seventh win in her last eight matches.

Winner: Hikaru Shida

After The Match: Hikaru Shida & Dr. Britt Baker Confrontation

Following the match, Shida gets into it with one of the handful of members of the “audience” near ringside.

Shida gets in Dr. Britt Baker’s face after the outspoken AEW women’s competitor talked some trash at one of the top-ranked AEW women’s contenders. Baker takes her shoe off to threaten to whack Shida with it, the two talk some trash and Shida eventually walks off, Baker puts her shoe back on and continues eating her food while she enjoys the show.

On that note, we head to another commercial break with a promised check-in with Jon Moxley coming up next.

Jon Moxley vs. Jake Hager Vignette

When we return from the break, an extensive, in-depth video package airs showing the history of the Jon Moxley and Chris Jericho / Inner Circle rivalry. The focus is on Jon Moxley vs. Jake Hager, with brand new one-on-one “Talking Heads” interviews with the AEW World Champion himself, as well as Chris Jericho, Jake Hager and others. Highlights of past action is shown while they mix in clips of Hager’s dominance in Bellator MMA, his AEW Dynamite highlights and more. After the lengthy vignette concludes, we head back to commercial.

Marko Stunt vs. “The Murderhawk Monster” Lance Archer

We’re back from the break and Cody’s match must be coming up soon, as we see and are introduced to Colt Cabana joining Tony Schiavone, replacing “The American Nightmare,” on commentary. With that in mind, Schiavone kicks it to Dasha Gonzalez in the ring, who introduces Jurassic Express member Marko Stunt.

Stunt, 4-4 in the AEW men’s division, makes his way to the ring with a ton of energy as Colt Cabana makes a couple of wise cracks on commentary. Before Stunt’s ring entrance is finished, the announcers kick it to a new message from Jake “The Snake” Roberts.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts in a pre-taped backstage interview that is mixed into a cool video package with some shots of Lance Archer looking like “The Murderhawk Monster” persona he is portraying now as Roberts talks about smiling but not being happy, and noting Cody isn’t smart, but he might be smart enough to be afraid of Archer and what they have planned for him. Jake makes a mean-spirited comment about Cody needing Brandi Rhodes’ permission, claiming he has a feeling that she wears the pants in their family.

With that behind us, “The Murderhawk Monster” makes his way out without Jake, taking out a camera man and doctor as he headed to the ring. He keeps referencing Colt Cabana on guest commentary while arrogantly walking around knowing Stunt is down and out after rag-dolling him around with different high-impact slams and moves.

Archer keeps taunting Cabana from the ring, with Schiavone bringing up their showdown coming up in the first round of the TNT World Championship Tournament. Archer is dominating this match with ease, turning it into essentially a completely one-sided squash match, with the announcers even joking about what the odds would be that Stunt stands a chance at winning this match tonight.

Stunt gets a very, very brief hope spot showing an incredibly quick sign of life and optimism before Archer quickly cuts his offensive attempts short, turning the tide immediately back in his favor. He hoists Stunt up and takes him out with his finishing move for the victory.

Winner: “The Murderhawk Monster” Lance Archer

After The Match: Lance Archer Goes Too Far

After the match, Archer headed to the back while Cabana on guest commentary claims to be ready for the biggest and baddest AEW has to offer, referencing his first round TNT Title Tournament match scheduled for AEW Dynamite in two weeks.

However, while heading to the backstage area, Archer gets to the curtain and decides to stop. He turns around, heads back to the ring and grabs Stunt.

From the ring apron, “The Murderhawk Monster” picks Stunt up and choke slams him about 20 feet away, as Stunt goes flying and sailing over the ring barricade and onto a couple of “members of the audience.”

The announcers again put over the dominance of Lance Archer as they send things to another pre-taped video package.

“The Exalted One” Brodie Lee Meets With The Dark Order

Colt Cabana and Tony Schiavone kicks it to a video package that shows Brodie Lee, “The Exalted One” of The Dark Order holding a meeting with the other members of the group.

He stands at a table in an office setting with a giant flat-plasma screen TV hanging on the wall behind him, but only displaying the “snowy” look you get when you turn to a wrong channel.

He orders one of The Dark Order minions to repeat a phrase, and the guy repeats it wrong twice, leading to Lee smashing a glass sitting on the table over his head and sending him away.

He goes over to the other member seated across the table, who looks scared.

Lee addresses that and then loses his cool again when that guy yawns. He, much like Vince McMahon is rumored to do, looks at sneezing as a sign of weakness and demands that he, nor anyone else sneeze in his presence again. After The Exalted One / Dark Order segment, we head back to another commercial break.

Dark Order Numbers 8 & 9 vs. The Natural Nightmares (Dustin Rhodes & QT Marshall)

We return from the break and we hear the theme music of The Dark Order. Number 8 and Number 9 members of The Dark Order will be representing the group in this one. The announcers bring up the weird numbers before they go on to make a ton of number jokes.

After their entrance wraps up, the theme music of Dustin Rhodes hits and out he comes accompanied by QT Marshall and Brandi Rhodes. Collectively, they are now known as The Natural Nightmares tag-team.

The bell sounds and here we go. QT Marshall holds up a hood that The Dark Order gave him last week. He throws it at them at charges at them to begin the match. The duo of Marshall and Rhodes jump off to an early offensive lead.

Marshall gets in some offense and moves before tagging Dustin in. Dustin gets in his stuff, with the small audience at ringside chanting “You Still Got It” to the pro wrestling legend. He tags Marshall back in and it is here where The Dark Order minions take over the offensive control.

After enjoying a couple of minutes in the offensive driver’s seat, Dustin finally gets the hot tag from an exhausted Marshall. Dustin comes in like a man possessed and is flying all over the place. He even hits a running flip off the ring apron, landing on The Dark Order member on the floor.

They get the Dark Order minion back in the ring and hit their double-team finisher. Dustin covers him and the referee makes the count of 1-2-3. The Natural Nightmares collect their first win as the AEW tag-team division gets an exciting new addition.

Winners: The Natural Nightmares (Dustin Rhodes & QT Marshall)

After The Match: The Exalted One Is Not Pleased

As the match segment wraps up with The Natural Nightmares posing in the ring with Brandi Rhodes as their old-school Green Day sound-alike theme music plays and the announcers hype up them as a significant addition to the tag-team scene in All Elite Wrestling.

As the trio made their way to the back, a very unhappy Brodie Lee — “The Exalted One” of The Dark Order — comes out to the ring.

Lee looks visibly pissed as he hits the ring, grabs either eight or nine and hits as Tony Schiavone described it, “a wicked power-bomb” that devastates The Dark Order member.

Meanwhile, the other member of The Dark Order slumps down in the corner in fear as the announcers put over the leading style of The Exalted One.

On that note, we head to a commercial break.

Chris Jericho Tries To Lure Matt Hardy’s Drone “Vanguard” To Inner Circle Again

We’re back from the break and after Tony Schiavone and Colt Cabana run down some of the action coming up in the TNT World Championship Tournament that kicks off next week, they kick it to a Chris Jericho segment.

We see an elaborate Chris Jericho pre-taped segment from his home. Jericho is sitting in his hot tub enjoying “A Little Bit of the Bubbley.” He talks about what happened last week with Matt Hardy on AEW Dynamite and the rivalry brewing between The Elite and The Inner Circle.

As Jericho talks trash about the various Elite members, including mocking Nick Jackson for taking off a bunch of time from work after the birth of his child, the Vanguard drone flies up to Jericho.

Jericho says he knew Vanguard would show up, talking to the drone like he’s a person like he did last week.

He tries to cleverly talk the drone into accepting his second offer to join The Inner Circle, as Jericho exits the hot tub and tries to offer the drone an Inner Circle t-shirt to accept his offer. The drone flies away, with Jericho running and chasing it while he yells at it for stealing his shirt.

Nick Jackson Medical Update

From there, we kick it to another elaborate pre-taped video package featuring The Young Bucks.

They talk about the violent attack from The Inner Circle that left The Young Buck member with his face and throat crushed by a garage door following a savage beat down.

The segment ends with the injured Nick Jackson claiming he is still not ready to return to the ring. After the video package wraps up, we head to another commercial break.

Darby Allin & Cody vs. Sammy Guevara & Shawn Spears

All four guys make their individual entrances to the ring for tonight’s main event and then we head to a commercial break. When we return, our final bout of the evening here on AEW Dynamite is up next.

We’re back and now our AEW Dynamite main event is officially underway. Cody and Spears started the match. Cody landed a front kick and tagged in Darby Allin, who quickly dumped Spears to the floor. Sammy was video blogging on his phone, and walked up to Brandi, who took his phone away.

Darby then charged and sent Sammy hard into the barricade. Cody and Darby then ended hitting suicide dives on both men on opposite sides of the ring. On that note, we head to a mid-match commercial break.

We’re back and we see Darby fighting his way out of the corner of the ring. Cody is busy with the ref, however, which allows Darby to hit a cheap shot. Guevara tagged in and applied a sleeper, but Darby broke free with a jawbreaker.

Sammy quickly recovered and tagged in Spears. Sammy and Spears started gambling about how long they could hold up Darby with a stalling suplex. Darby won the bet when he held up Darby for 16 seconds. He rolled him up instead for a two count.

Allin tried again, and Darby escaped again. Darby landed a slam and made a hot tag to Cody. He came into the match hot and landed a disaster kick on Spears and a springboard cutter on Guevara for a two count.

Cody then took off his weight belt and tossed it to Brandi. Cody then applied a Sharpshooter to Guevara, who escaped when Spears entered the ring. Cody applied a Figure Four to Spears, but Guevara broke it up with a standing Shooting Star press.

Spears pulled Cody to the outside and threw him over the barricade on the heel side of the ring. Darby Allin splashed Spears, but Guevara distracted the ref while Cody got beat down by the heels in the “audience” here at the closed set AEW Dynamite show.

Now back in the ring, Spears accidentally knocks Guevara out of the ring, then ends up on the floor himself. Allin with a suicide dive on Guevara, tries for one on Spear, but is caught in midair and thrown into the barricade.

With the action on the floor now, Cody is getting beat up. Allin then climbs the building pole and hits an insane coffin drop on both Spears and Guevara! That was crazy!

Afterwards, Darby throws Spears in the ring, heads to the top, but Guevara follows him up and throws him down towards the barricade. Cody goes up and hits a reverse suplex on Guevara. Spears then lands a frog splash on Cody.

From there, “The Chairman of AEW” Shawn Spears calls for a chair. He gets one and looks to blast Cody with it, however Allin takes it, but then Guevara takes it from him. While this is going on, Spears rolls up Allin for the 1-2-3, giving his team the win.

Winners: Sammy Guevara & Shawn Spears

After The Match: Darby Allin Lays Out Cody

In an unexpected angle to close out the show, Darby Allin decked “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes.

After dropping the bout for his team by being on the wrong end of a pin fall from Spears, an upset Allin didn’t want to hear from anyone. Cody, however, kept trying to help him up. Eventually, Allin decked him and left him laying in the ring as he headed to the back.
