AJ Styles was an unfortunate victim of the injury bug after taking a rough spot from a returning legend during the WWE Royal Rumble 2020 pay-per-view in Houston, Texas on Sunday night.
While competing in the Men’s Royal Rumble match in the main event of the WWE Royal Rumble 2020 PPV, “The Phenomenal One” suffered a left shoulder injury that was serious enough that it resulted in a change of plans, leading to an earlier-than-expected elimination for Styles.
The injury occurred after Styles took a devastating spear from returning WWE Hall Of Fame legend Edge (Watch Extended Video Footage Of Edge’s WWE Royal Rumble Return) and rotated in such a manner that he landed on his shoulder, twisting it.
It was obvious right away that Styles was hurt as he lay off to the side of the ring for several minutes following that spot, while subtly speaking with referees at ringside.
Styles did not really engage in any physicality following that but did communicate to Edge about being eliminated and he was promptly thrown over the top rope and out of the match soon thereafter.
Styles was then checked out again by ringside officials and was examined backstage.
Reports indicate he was seen with his shoulder/arm taped and iced up following the match and he is expected to undergo more testing later today to determine the extent of the injury and how long he will be sidelined.
