Backstage News On AEW’s Plans To Have Sting Wrestle Matches Soon

As we saw last Wednesday, former WCW star and WWE Hall of Famer Sting made his AEW debut to a huge surprise and according to Sports Illustrated, there are actually plans for the 61-year old to step into the ring at some point in the future.

Sting’s WWE career was effectively over after he suffered a neck injury five years ago and his contract with the company quietly expired earlier this year after which WWE pulled all his merchandise from their store.

The Sports Illustrated story notes that despite never wrestling for WWE again, Sting was still seeking “closure” on his career and felt he had more left to prove.

While he is not expected to be near a weekly in-ring performer, the ideas being tossed around include “cinematic matches, tag matches, and carefully designed spots” that would help him get compete in matches but also help get some of AEW’s younger stars over.

As for how the deal went down, Tony Khan and Sting had been friends for years and Khan negotiated with him in private, only revealing the signing to his four executive VPs after it was done.

He also reportedly worked “tirelessly” to get Sting signed and the Hall of Famer noted that he was “thoroughly impressed with the professionalism, long-term planning and compensation” from the AEW boss.
