Backstage News On Reaction By AEW Wrestlers In Competing At Grand Slam: Mexico

AEW held its Grand Slam: Mexico event this past Wednesday night at Arena Mexico, which also featured talent from CMLL. The show was headlined by a 10-Man Tag Team Match that saw The Young Bucks, Jon Moxley, Wheeler Yuta, and The Beast Mortos face off against Will Ospreay, Swerve Strickland, and The Opps.

According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, many AEW stars took pride in last Wednesday night’s Grand Slam: Mexico, considering it a success for both All Elite Wrestling and CMLL. The report noted that for many AEW performers, competing in Arena Mexico was a career highlight, akin to wrestling in the Tokyo Dome. This marked the first time that many of the talent had performed in Arena Mexico.

The report further stated that only a select group of wrestlers have competed in that venue, along with Madison Square Garden, Wembley Stadium, and the Tokyo Dome. Following AEW Grand Slam: Mexico, several wrestlers achieved a notable milestone by competing in all four legendary venues, including Mercedes Moné. This exclusive group known as the “big four club” is viewed as a significant accomplishment among wrestlers. FTR would have become the first tag team to join this group, but Cash Wheeler was not cleared to compete on Wednesday, leaving Dax Harwood to achieve it alone.

Other talent who reached this milestone last Wednesday include Will Ospreay, Brody King, Ricochet, and Adam Cole. They join previous members such as John Tenta, Road Warrior Animal, Juice Robinson, Chris Jericho, Jon Moxley, Rocky Romero, Jay Lethal, Tomohiro Ishii, Kazuchika Okada, Zack Sabre Jr., Mark Briscoe, Bryan Danielson, and Claudio Castagnoli. Dustin Rhodes would have joined this group as well had he been booked. Tony Schiavone also achieved this milestone and is the only announcer to have broadcast from all four venues. If Jim Ross had called the action last Wednesday night, he would have reached this milestone as well, but he is currently recovering from a battle with colon cancer.
