Backstage WWE News On Upcoming John Cena Vs. AJ Styles Match At Crown Jewel

WWE is moving forward with John Cena’s retirement tour with another opponent on the schedule for Crown Jewel: Perth next month.

WWE has booked Cena vs. AJ Styles and according to Dave Meltzer of f4wonline.com, while it may have seemed like a decision made in haste, it actually isn’t the case and WWE has planned for this match for a while.

The report notes that Cena has no more televised WWE appearances before Crown Jewel which is why the build for the match against Styles took place on social media with Cena basically calling for the match and Triple H then stepping in and giving the fans “what they want” by making it official.

Meltzer added that the match between the two was always planned for Crown Jewel and when Cena did a homage to Styles because they weren’t going to get to wrestle each other before his retirement, it was all part of a structured plan to build to the eventual match. Styles worked-shoot promo that aired on Raw during a commercial break was also planned as a buildup.

“This match was always scheduled for Australia — always. So the whole deal about Cena and AJ, you know, the idea that Cena was doing the tribute to him because he wasn’t going to get to wrestle him. That was actually to build to this match, that was not actually ever the case.”

WWE Crown Jewel takes place on October 11 and with it being in Australia, the start time is an early one for North American viewers – 8 AM ET.
