PWI Names Cody vs. Dustin Rhodes From AEW Double Or Nothing As 2019 "Match Of The Year"

Cody vs. Dustin Rhodes At AEW Double Or Nothing Named 2019 Pro Wrestling Illustrated Match Of The Year

In its’ first year as a promotion, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) promoted the highly-coveted Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) “Match of the Year” for 2019.

AEW star Dustin Rhodes took to Twitter last night to comment on PWI naming his AEW Double Or Nothing 2019 classic with his brother Cody as the “Match of the Year” for last year.

The bout featured Rhodes returning to “The Natural” gimmick, and was his first appearance since being released by WWE a few weeks prior.

“Very honored and humbled to be nominated #MOTY,” wrote Dustin via Twitter this week. “Great talented field. This was storytelling at its finest between 2 brothers.”

Dustin added, “It was an invested, complete and perfect night. Thank all of you for watching. Thanks for still believing in me.”

Additionally, Cody chimed in with his reaction to the news on Twitter.

“I’m glad wrestling fans enjoyed it,” wrote the AEW EVP. “It’s one of my favorite matches, and it stands as a snapshot of the wrestling I enjoy and want. Thank you!”

After an early start that saw both brothers pay homage to their late father “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, Cody took the early advantage, and mocked Dustin by mimicking his old Stardust gimmick.

Dustin fired back with an impressive arsenal of offense, but would be busted open by Brandi Rhodes after a cane shot to the head.

As the blood poured and the tension built, the Rhodes brothers threw everything they had at one another, including Dustin pulling out a code-red.

In the end…a pair of Cross-Rhodes finisher gave “The American Nightmare” the victory, leading to a post-match reunion that left the Las Vegas crowd in a puddle of tears.
