On Saturday evening, UFC Welterweight contender Colby Covington proved why he is among the top heels in the business today.
Colby “Chaos” Covington improved his overall pro MMA record to 15-1 (10-1 in the UFC, 7-0 in last 7) with a dominant victory over former UFC Welterweight Champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler in the main event of the UFC Newark: Covington vs. Lawler event at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday, August 3rd.
With the win, Covington not only won the rights to the claim of the top dog at 170-pounds at the American Top Team gym in Coconut Creek, Florida, but he also made a case to be the next challenger to current UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman, a title-holder who also has Ben Askren flying-knee conqueror “Street Jesus” Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal waiting-in-the-wings for him if-and-when the UFC says the time is ready.
So, why is all of this pro wrestling related?
In an excellent move to ensure he would garner heel heat from the fans inside the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., the former interim UFC 170-lb. champion Covington made his lights out, wide-arena-shot main event entrance to the Octagon to the familiar theme music of WWE Hall Of Famer and former amateur-wrestling Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle.
The fans in Newark, clearly smartened up to “The Olympic Hero,” played along with defeaning “You Suck! You Suck!” chants on cue on the beat of Angle’s longtime WWE entrance tune.
