Eddie Edwards had his 2021 plans changed up in quite a significant fashion back in May.
The IMPACT Wrestling star was reportedly in-line to challenge IMPACT World Champion Kenny Omega for the title at the upcoming Slammiversary pay-per-view before being pulled from in-ring action due to issues with appendicitis that led to surgery, and forced the promotion to scrap the originally intended Omega-Edwards showdown.
During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Edwards spoke about having the plans changed due to his health issues and how he was looking forward to sharing the squared circle with the AEW and IMPACT Wrestling World Champion.
Featured below are some of the highlights from the interview where he touches on these topics and more.
On the beginning of his issues: “I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it, so I did a little kayfabe powder out of the party. I exited stage left, and I tried to sleep it off. The pain kept getting more severe, but I thought it would be silly if I went to the hospital for a stomachache. But a few of the boys came upstairs, they saw how I looked and they encouraged me to go to the hospital. The pain just got worse and worse. When I saw the doctor, he quickly could tell I had appendicitis. So I had surgery and stayed in the hospital for a night. I was willing to fly home right away, but Tommy didn’t think I should be flying so soon after the surgery. Impact extended my stay in the hotel for six days, and then I flew home a week later. I’ve been back in the gym, and now I’m good to go.”
On wanting to step into the squared circle against Kenny Omega: “I want to be in the ring against the best, and, right now, Kenny is one of the best. He’s also our champ, and I’d love to be the guy to bring that title back to Impact. The stars haven’t aligned yet, but hopefully that match will happen.”
