Edge Talks To ESPN About WWE Backlash 2020

Edge Initially Laughed At Backlash “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” Marketing Scheme, Thought WWE Was Joking

WWE Hall Of Fame legend Adam “Edge” Copeland recently spoke with ESPN to promote his “Greatest Wrestling Match” against Randy Orton at this Sunday night’s WWE Backlash 2020 pay-per-view.

During the discussion, Edge spoke about the decision to promote his showdown against “The Viper” in such a fashion, explaining that at first he didn’t even think the company was being serious.

“I just laughed because I didn’t think it was serious,” Edge said. “Then I realized fairly quickly it was.”

The Rated-R Superstar continued, elaborating on his initial reaction to the news and explaining how the marketing campaign is one that is almost guaranteed to “set yourself up for failure.”

“Then my reaction was, is this wise, because anytime you say something the greatest ever beforehand, you’re setting yourself up for failure,” he said. “And I don’t ever want to think that way. I need to think the opposite of that. I can’t control the court of public opinion. I need to do and be proud of the work that I put in. All I can do is take it as if this is all just a bonus and in a weird way, a compliment. Or it’s a giant rib. I don’t know.”

Edge went on to talk about how if it were up to him, he would not advertise his match in such a fashion, directly acknowledging that it was a Vince McMahon decision that clearly wasn’t going to be changed.

“This shouldn’t even be happening,” said the WWE Hall Of Fame legend. “Let alone for the company, and let’s call it straight, Vince, to think that he can bill this the ‘Greatest Match Ever.'”

He concluded, “Would I have preferred they not billed it as that? Absolutely, but I also know there are times where heels get dug in the sand and there’s no changing it.”
