The "#SpeakingOut" accusations levied against Matt Riddle are once again making headlines after the alleged victim, a former EVOLVE Wrestling employee, has filed a lawsuit against the Friday Night SmackDown Superstar, World Wrestling Entertainment and EVOLVE Wrestling, prompting WWE to release an official statement on the matter.
Matt Riddle was accused earlier this year of sexual assault by Samantha Tavel, known in wrestling circles as "Candi Cartwright" and at the time Riddle denounced the allegations and ended up filing legal proceedings against Tavel, claiming she was stalking him.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that now Tavel has filed her own lawsuit against Riddle, WWE, EVOLVE (which is now defunct) and an unnamed founder of EVOLVE, believed to be Gabe Sapolsky.
She is suing them for $10 million each for what she claims was a series of sexual assaults committed by Riddle between 2017 and 2020 as well as claims that she was fired from EVOLVE in January 2020 after allegedly standing up to Riddle, suggesting that the company's reason for her dismissal was "issues with talent."
An interesting development in this story is that while Tavel claims she was gone from EVOLVE in January 2020 due to her issues with Riddle, EVOLVE continued to use her until March 2020 (at which time they stopped running events due to the COVID-19 pandemic) and there are tweets which feature her.
This throws into question her claims or at the very least, her version of the timeline of events.
WWE released the following statement in response:
“WWE has not been served with a lawsuit by Ms. Tavel. However, if served, we will vigorously defend ourselves and contest it.”
