— Last summer, former WWE executive Shane McMahon was spotted meeting with AEW President Tony Khan at an airport in Texas which fueled a ton of rumors that McMahon could be on the verge of making an appearance or more with the promotion. However, since then not only has nothing of the sort materialized, but there has been no news on whether McMahon and Khan would even have discussions though a report last night paints an interesting picture of what went down.
— Speaking on his podcast, former WWE commentator Jonathan Coachman shared additional details of the meeting that he learned which suggested that when Khan and McMahon met, Shane asked for equity in AEW and basically wanted to come in, take over everything and run the entire show. Coachman then stated that after that meeting, Khan simply “ghosted” McMahon.
— Fightfulselect.com then reported that while the accuracy of Shane wanting an equity in AEW cannot be confirmed, it is true that Khan never followed up with Shane after their initial meeting and that a source close to McMahon also confirmed that he did in fact want to “run things” but didn’t have knowledge or familiarity with the AEW product or business model. The source added that when Khan essentially went radio silent with Shane, he didn’t take it personally and that it almost seemed to Khan that Shane was joking when he brought up the possibility of taking over. Presumably, Shane felt that his years in the business behind the scenes at WWE would have lended him valuable insight into running a promotion.
— For what it’s worth, from Tony Khan’s perspective, there never really seemed to be any plans for him to appear on AEW TV or be involved with the company as Khan only noted to people that the two sides simply met and talked. However, the source close to Shane did concede that it’s possible that McMahon could make a “cameo appearance” for AEW at some point but didn’t think there was much of a chance that the two sides would do any meaningful business together beyond that.
