Friday Night SmackDown Quick Recap for August 19, 2022

Matches Tonight: Three (approx. 35 minutes, estimated*)
  • WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship Tournament, Round One Match: NXT’s Toxic Attraction vs Natalya & Sonya Deville. Hours prior to the match, Zoey Stark & Nikkita Lyons were replaced due to an undisclosed injury (or to whom). NXT’s Toxic Attraction–Gigi Dolin & Jacy Jayne–filled in, won, and will advance to face the team of Raquel Rodriguez & Aliyah in the semi-finals.
  • Fatal 5-Way Intercontinental Contender’s Match: Ricochet, Madcap Moss, Happy Corbin, Sheamus, Sami Zayn. The winner faces Gunther for the IC title in Cardiff. Excellent, nearly half-hour long match that saw Sheamus win. Sami Zayn was the HUGE crowd favorite in Canada and had the best pop a wrestler’s had in the WWE in ages. Sheamus will challenge Gunther in Cardiff. Great finish to a great match.
  • Singles Main Event Match: SmackDown Women’s Champion Liv Morgan vs Shotzi. Short match that saw Morgan win despite Shotzi’s targeting of Morgan’s previously-injured arm. Post-match, Baszler attacked Morgan. The two face off two weeks from tomorrow night at our next premium live event in Cardiff.
Miscellaneous Non-Match Segments of Note:
  • Arrested Developments: Rousey opened our show, demanding to have her suspension lifted. She beat up some security then was promptly arrested. 8:01-8:10pm EST.
  • Hit Row/Maximum Male Models: Hit Row interrupted LA Knight/Max Dupri‘s attempt to…we’re not even sure. Hit Row came out, interrupted them immediately, beat them up and then rapped their theme. 8:37-8:42pm EST.
  • A Viking Funeral: The Viking Raiders held a “viking funeral” for the New Day. Not even remotely historically accurate, either. 9:21-pm EST.
  • Kross Cult: In a vignette, Kross & Scarlet explained that Kross’ issue with Drew McIntyre is that, like Reigns, McIntyre is a chosen one–he was chosen to be the next big thing. Kross would repeatedly tel McIntyre in the vignette that “they” chose wrong, were wrong, and Kross is back to fix that.
  • Clash at the Castle/Cardiff Card Updates: (If they mention a match, it gets listed even if we knew it last week, sorry) Roman Reigns vs Drew McIntyre for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. Sheamus vs Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship.
  • A Roman and a Scotsman Walk into a Welsh Bar…: Roman cut a promo dissing Drew; Drew claimed Roman hadn’t earned the right to wear the titles. The two brawled, with McIntyre standing tall over the fallen champ. 9:47-9:59pm EST.
  • Next Week on SmackDown: Detroit hosts SD #1201, where Rodriguez & Aliyah face Toxic Attraction in a semi-finals tag tourney match. Happy Corbin takes on Ricochet. And Trish Stratus returns on Raw!
