James had a chance to shine on last night’s “In Your Face” edition of Raw, where she wrestled Asuka for the Raw Women’s Championship.
Due to a botched call in the match by the referee, it seems running for the title is possibly out of reach now for James, who is a six-time WWE champion.
Prior to last night’s match against Asuka, Mickie James gave a heartfelt interview where she stated this may be her “last opportunity” to challenge for the title. This definitely played into the whispers of her days in the ring possibly coming to a close.
Mickie James and Asuka put on a pretty good match, all up until that confusing ending. They were doing some mat work and then all of a sudden the referee stopped the match and declared that Asuka was the winner because Mickie James could no longer continue.
With a look of shock and confusion, James just stared at the referee as her arms dropped, Asuka releasing her hold on James. That look was significant to fans as it reiterated that that was clearly not supposed to be the finish.
To the referee’s (minor) defense, it does perhaps look as though she tapped from the referee’s point-of-view:
FWIW; it does look like Mickie may have tapped from the ref’s POV pic.twitter.com/6LnieICtts

That’s a pretty big stretch, but this referee is probably went straight to the unemployment office from the ThunderDome.
Mickie James took to her Instagram, not with so much an explanation, but an acknowledgment of the situation:
Perhaps they will make this turn into a storyline with Mickie James joining Retribution to go against WWE officials/management. We will have to wait and see.
