Monday Night Raw Quick Recap for August 22, 2022

Matches Tonight: Six (approx. 91 minutes)
  • WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship Tournament, Semi-Finals Match: Alexa Bliss & Asuka vs Dakota Kai & Iyo Sky w/ Bayley. The advancing team faces the winners of Raquel Rodriguez & Aliyah vs Toxic Attraction in the finals*. Kai & Sky picked up the win after a lengthy match. 8:21-8:36pm EST.
  • Singles Match: Finn Bálor vs Dolph Ziggler. Long, technical match that saw Finn win after a cheap shot from Rhea when the ref was distracted. 8:41-9:03pm EST.
  • The Alpha Academy’s Open Challenge Singles Match: Chad Gable w/ Otis vs Kevin Owens. KO pulled off the win and beat down both Otis & Gable after the match. 9:14-9:27pm EST.
  • Singles Match: Bayley vs Aliyah. Rather slow match; Bayley’s first since June of ’21. Bayley picked up the win with her new (old) finisher the Rose Plant. 9:36-9:43pm EST.
  • Tag Team Match: Bobby Lashley & AJ Styles vs the Miz & Ciampa. Lashley & Styles lost via DQ after Dexter Lumis kidnapped the Miz. This, ultimately, caused the DQ. Another unnamed Superstar–currently rumored to be Santos Escobar–attempted to interfere and was drug away by security prior to Lumis’ kidnapping. 9:52-10:08pm EST.
  • Singles Homecoming Main Event Match: Edge(h) vs Damian Priest w/ the Judgment Day. This is billed as Edge’s first match in Toronto in over a decade (May 2010, when he defeated former tag mate Christian). Solid, lengthy match that saw Edge win and get a save from his wife, Beth Phoenix, when the Judgment Day attempted to gang up on him post-match. Big win for the star after a twelve-year match-absence in Toronto. 10:41-10:59pm EST.
Miscellaneous Non-Match Segments of Note:
  • New Opening/Theme: Raw debuted a new theme song and opening video package. After the next mentioned bulleted segment, we got pyro and fireworks to hype up the crowd before…
  • Seth Rollins & Riddle Brawl: After a brand new video and theme, we opened Raw with Rollins & Riddle brawling backstage and into the arena as commentary hyped that they want to hurt each other. In case we weren’t clear on that. 8:01-8:03pm EST.
  • Trish Stratus Spoke: A pair of commercial breaks, Trish hinted at “one more match,” Bayley/Kai/Sky interrupted and insulted the legend, and Asuka/Bliss/Belair made the save and set up our first match of the night. 8:06-8:18
  • This Friday on SmackDown: a *Fatal 4-Way “Second Chance” Women’s Tag Tournament Match after Toxic Attraction were removed from contention due to an injury suffered by Gigi Dolin. The four previously-losing teams will face off in a Fatal 4-Way to see who takes on Raquel Rodriguez & Aliyah in the semi-finals.
  • Returns/Teases: During the Styles tag match, Dexter Lumis kidnapped the Miz and another Superstar–as of this writing unconfirmed but believed to be NXT’s Santos Escobar (rumor, rumor, RUMOR!). Also, at 10:15pm, “Johnny Wrestling” himself–Johnny Gargano–returned to the WWE! He cut a great promo about the last nine months, was reunited with Theory–and superkicked the arrogant, youngest “Money in the Bank” champion after the arrogant youngster denigrated Gargano. The crowd ate it up and loved every second of Johnny Wrestling’s return. 10:15-10:26pm EST.
  • New Music Dropped: Looks like new management has authorized some new themes, including for Raw, Finn Bálor, Damian Priest, Ciampa, and Aliyah. Expect probably more over the next few months!
  • Next Week on Raw: Rollins and Riddle come face-to-face. Women’s Tag team tournament finals as Kai & Sky face the winner of this Friday’s semi-finals match. Kurt Angle will be live in Pittsburgh.
