News On WWE Smackdown Moving From FOX to USA Earlier Than Expected

— WWE’s flagship program, Friday Night SmackDown, is set to transition from FOX to the USA Network earlier than expected. Originally slated to conclude its run on FOX at the end of September, the move was prompted by FOX’s plans to air college football in September, necessitating the shift of several SmackDown episodes to FS1.

— Consequently, USA Network has agreed to debut SmackDown on September 13th, maintaining its traditional Friday slot. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there have been discussions about holding the first show in Seattle, with expectations of a loaded lineup. Additionally, USA Network is gearing up to promote the week of September 9th to 13th as “WWE Week.”

— However, the decision to keep SmackDown on Friday nights has raised eyebrows. The Observer points out that this move appears counterintuitive for both WWE and the network. Airing on Friday evenings typically results in a 20% reduction in viewership compared to other days of the week. Despite this, USA Network is paying more for SmackDown than for Raw, yet will only have two hours instead of three and likely fewer viewers.
