— In a storyline that has been building for almost two months, Drake Maverick is officially back with WWE. Even though he was wrestling for a contract in the NXT Interim Cruiserweight championship tournament and ended up falling just short against El Hijo del Fantasma, Triple H came out afterwards, shook Maverick’s hand and presented him with a new NXT contract. Maverick, who has been quite emotional after getting released back in April, signed the agreement.
— In an interesting aside, while WWE had previously been promoting the tournament as an “interim” one with (former) champion Jordan Devlin unable to compete due to travel restrictions, on tonight’s broadcast the “interim” reference was completely dropped, perhaps implying that El Hijo del Fantasma is the Cruiserweight champion moving forward.
— Also announced on tonight’s broadcast of NXT was that the NXT TakeOver: In Your House main event between Adam Cole and Velveteen Dream is now a “Backlot Brawl” as well as a stipulation that if Dream loses, he can’t challenge for the NXT Championship while Cole continues to hold the belt. As well and consistent with what was reported, the match (which has already been taped) is going to be filmed at night outside with cars surrounding the ring.
— Fandango, who has been out of action since late 2019, returned to action on NXT last night, teaming up with Tyler Breeze as part of a triple threat match. It was noted that Fandango, who suffered a UCL injury in his left elbow, decided to rehab instead of get surgery even though he had originally said he was going to undergo Tommy John surgery.
