NXT TakeOver 31 Results From Capitol Wrestling Center In Orlando, FL. (10/4/2020)

The WWE returns with their latest event in TakeOver chronology for the brand, as NXT TakeOver 31 goes down live this evening from the redesigned and rebranded “Capitol Wrestling Center” inside the WWE Performance Center facility in Orlando, Florida.

The CWC will play host to NXT TakeOver 31 tonight when the show kicks off on the WWE Network with the main show starting at 7/6c, immediately following a 30-minute Kickoff Show pre-show special which will be available across all of WWE’s various social platforms, as well as right here on this page.

On tap for the NXT TakeOver 31 live special event is Finn Balor vs. Kyle O’Reilly for the NXT Championship, Io Shirai vs. Candice LeRae for the NXT Women’s Championship, Damian Priest vs. Johnny Gargano for the NXT North American Championship, Santos Escobar vs. Isaiah “Swerve” Scott for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship and a one-on-one showdown between KUSHIDA and The Velveteen Dream.

We enter an Kyle O’Reilly promo highlighting the events leading up to his NXT Championship main event match.

Adam Cole Statement

Adam Cole states he is excited to be there for Kyle O’Reilly’s big night, that’s how confident he is that his Undisputed Era brother will win this evening’s main event match for the NXT Championship title.

Show Opening

NXT Comes to us from the Capitol Wrestling Center for the first time as NXT is ready to take over! Vic Joseph welcomes us for tonight’s pay-per-view that will have FOUR championship matches!

NXT North American Championship
Damian Priest (c) vs. Johnny Gargano

Out first for the first match-up of the evening is Damian Priest as his music sounds in the new Capitol Wrestling Center Arena for his match against Johnny Gargano for the North American Championship!

Out next is none other than “Johnny Wrestling” himself, JOHNNY GARGANO! Gargano makes his way down the ramp and enters the ring with his opponent for the evening, Damian Priest. The referee signals for the bell. The bell rings and the match is officially underway!

Johnny runs in at Damian and begins attempts to Chop away at Priest as the clear size advantage is against Gargano tonight. Gargano is whipped into the corner but goes up and over Priest and ducks a Left Elbow. Priest connects with a Heel Kick on Gargano taking him down. Priest continues to land a few good kicks and right hands. Priest gets Gargano in the corner of the ring, whipping him to the opposing corner.

Gargano counters, but Priest counters again and takes Gargano to the canvas. Priest goes for a cover to retain, Gargano kicks out at two. Gargano pulls Priest off the apron and Priest crashes hard on the outside of the ring. Gargano back in the ring, flying through the middle rope to go airborn and collides with Priest who slams into the cage and barricade behind him. Gargano back in the ring again, then exiting to drag Priest back to the ring. A hard Right Hand from Damian Priest rocks Gargano on the outside of the ring.

The match heads back inside the ring, Priest takes control of the match up! Priest connects with a Broken Arrow for the cover, Gargano gets his right shoulder up at the two! Priest gets back to his feet as Gargano struggles to make his way back to a standing position. Priest looks for the Razor’s Edge, Gargano crawls through. Gargano looks for a kick, Priest blocks.

Priest slams Gargano to the canvas, Gargano hoisted up for the Razor’s Edge, Gargano rolls through for the cover, Priest kicks out with milliseconds to spare! Gargano and Priest in the center of the ring, Gargano with an Enzuguri, Priest with a Kick, then a Forearm and Right Hand to the jaw. Priest getting ready, goes for a Spin Kick, Gargano shoves Priest shoulder first into the post then knocks Priest up and over the top rope. Gargano once again flies through the middle ropes, Priest catches Gargano looking for South of Heaven, Gargano counters. Priest with a Kick knocks Gargano off the apron.

Both men on the outside, Priest hoists Gargano up, Razor’s Edge onto the apron, Gargano going spine first! Priest rolls in and goes for the cover, Gargano kicks out at two! Gargano looks pained as Priest tries to catch his breath!

Priest hits a Clothesline on Gargano. Gargano with kick after kick, Priest looks for the Reckoning, Gargano counters with Sliced Bread and a cover for the two count! A hellacious Elbow by Gargano who tries to rally as Priest looks spent. Gargano mocks the champ, Priest back up quick, Gargano still rolls through and gets the cover for a two!

Both men now back to their feet, Priest catches Gargano in One Final Beat attempt, Gargano goes up, gets caught, Priest hits South of Heaven with authority for the cover! Gargano kicks out at two again!

Priest on the apron tries to hoist up the challenger, Gargano charges in with a big Forearm. Gargano charges in again and is met with a Kick from Priest. Superkick by Gargano, then another Superkick to the jaw. Gargano looks for One Final Beat, Priest counters and hits The Reckoning for the three count pin and win to retain his title!

After the Match

We head into replays of the match-up as commentary breaks down the highlights of the match. We return to the ring and Priest holds his North American Championship belt high in victory.

Earlier Today

Kyle O’Reilly arriving earlier today with the rest of the Undisputed Era. Finn Balor is then seen arriving alone as well earlier in the day.

Video Package For Kushida vs. Velveteen Dream

Kushida vs. Velveteen Dream is set to take place tonight, we are sent into a video package showing the events leading up to tonight’s match-up. Kushida saying it is not easy, “I don’t fight for me, I fight for my family.”

The video switches to Velveteen Dream asking, “Will the real Kushida please stand up?” Dream ready to win as he does his best work under the brightest lights. Kushida’s first one on one match at a pay-per-view to be against Dream.

Velveteen Dream vs. Kushida

We return to the arena which is a smoky purple hue as Velveteen Dream poses at the top of the stage. Dream’s entrance theme plays as he makes his way down the ramp towards the ring for the second match of the evening. The announcers talk about feeling nostalgic, noting Velveteen Dream reminds them of Gorgeous George — the original flamboyant superstar.

As The Dream was finishing up his ring entrance, he is attacked by KUSHIDA, who is being promoted during this rivalry as finally being done smiling and letting his violent streak shine through. He’s doing exactly that as the bell sounds after his cheap shot to get this one officially underway.

Later, Dream heads up top and connects with the Purple Rainmaker on Kushida, Dream clearly injured as he lands on the left arm which is damaged. Dream goes for the cover, Kushida kicks out at two. Dream back to his feet, Kushida grabs onto Dream who assists Kushida to his feet to deliver a Clothesline landing Kushida right back on the mat.

Dream looks to head up top again, looking for another Purple Rainmaker. Dream stops to pose, Kushida meets him on the top looking for the Hoverboard Lock as they land on the canvas. Dream kicking in agony, reaching for the bottom rope. Kushida rolls through, not letting go!

Dream back to his feet with Kushida still holding on, Dream looks for the Dream Valley Driver, Kushida is able to counter and lock in the submission, causing Dream to tap!

Winner: Kushida

After the Match

We head into replays as the commentary team discuss the new style of Kushida. We return to the ring as the referee raises the hand of the victor, Kushida runs back and once again attacks Dream and locks in the submission once again, continuing to damage the already injured arm of Velveteen Dream!

More NXT official referees enter the ring trying to push Kushida from the ring, again Kushida makes his way around and locks in a submission again on Dream who continues to tap as he cries out in agony! A low chant of “One More Time!” is heard from the crowd as we head to the next segment and Kushida exits the main stage.

NXT Cruiserweight Championship
Santos Escobar (c) vs. Isaiah “Swerve” Scott

A video package is shown with promos from both competitors for this Cruiserweight match-up!

We return to the arena as Isaiah “Swerve” Scott makes his way out as his entrance theme sounds in the arena. Swerve struts down the ramp towards the ring, circling the ring with confidence. Out next is Santos Escobar who makes his way to the ring wearing the Cruiserweight Championship belt with pride as he enters the ring. Escobar removes the belt, kisses it, then holds it high as he stands tall in the center of the ring. We get a quick WWE Battleground announcement and then we return to the ring.

The referee signals for the bell and this cruiserweight match-up is officially underway! Swerve gets an early Waist-lock on Escobar who swiftly turns and counters into a Waist-lock of his own on Swerve. An early nearfall. Swerve lifts Escobar only to have Escobar counter and roll through for a pin attempt. Lots of fast paced action, both Escobar and Swerve back to their feet standing in the same set up position, Escobar smiles then continues with the speed. Swerve sends Escobar up and over, Escobar lands on the outside.

Swerve heads to the outside on the apron and leaps off in a flip landing on Escobar. Swerve again heads up top, landing another high risk high flying move on Escobar before rolling back in the ring. Yet again, Swerve heads across the ring and lands a Moonsault up and over the top rope, landing on Escobar on the outside of the ring!

Back in the ring, Swerve goes for a cover inside the ring, Escobar kicks out and quickly rolls out of the ring. The referee begins the count. Swerve drags Escobar to the ring post, using joint manipulation to bend back the elbow of Escobar. Swerve returns to the ring at the count of nine. Swerve goes for a cover, Escobar kicks out.

Swerve again stretching the arm of Escobar who shouts in agony. Escobar finally gets a Dive of his own through the ropes, putting Swerve into the barricade covered in chain and plexiglas. Back in the ring, Escobar now in control as he heads in at Swerve in the corner of the ring. Escobar lifts Swerve to the top turnbuckle and meets him on the top to land the Frankensteiner!

Escobar goes for the cover, Swerve kicks out. Escobar uses the rope to manipulate Swerve, the referee checks on Swerve as Escobar drags him back to his feet. The crowd is hyped now! Escobar says he’s going to spit in the face of Swerve, Swerve back to his feet quickly and covers Escobar’s mouth. Swerve with a flurry of fists in the corner followed by a Clothesline. The crowd pops!

Swerve throws Escobar and then lands a hard take down, Escobar heads to the outside, Swerve jumps to the apron and lands a massive kick! Swerve rolls Escobar back into the ring. Swerve heads in and hits the Rolling Thunder Flatliner for the cover! Escobar kicks out! Swerve to the top turnbuckle, Escobar to one knee, then stands, Swerve grabs Escobar by the hair, Swerve slides through.

Escobar with a Kick. Swerve grabs Escobar for the DDT, Escobar kicks out JUST in the nick of time! Suddenly Joaquin Wilde grabs the attention of the referee as he climbs up on the apron. Raul Mendoza shoves Swerve into Escobar who goes for the cover, Swerve STILL kicks out, even with the numbers advantage! Ashante “Thee” Adonis runs down to even the odds and he helps Swerve beat Wilde and Mendoza to the back.

Escobar with a Kick and the Phantom Driver on Swerve for the cover, Swerve kicks out! Escobar is stunned as he backs up to the corner of the ring. No one has ever kicked out of the Phantom Driver according to commentary! Escobar comes in with multiple Stomps. Escobar with a Suplex, the Three Amigos have called back to Eddie Guerrero! Escobar heads to the top, Swerve rolls out of the way of the Crossbody Splash!

Swerve grabs the arm of Escobar, kicking it backwards then hitting the House Call. Swerve heads to the top and gets the 450 on Escobar for the cover. Escobar kicks out at two! Now Swerve is stunned that Escobar was able to kick out! Swerve returns and grabs Escobar by the hair as the crowd chants, “This is Awesome!” both competitors spill to the outside. Escobar, but the Champion shrugs him off and Scott falls, his head connecting with the turnbuckle rod. Escobar gets him back inside and hits a double-underhook facebuster for the win.

We head into replays as commentary notes the highlights of the match! We then head to a commercial.

Backstage – Kyle O’Reilly

We return from the break, once again we see Kyle O’Reilly preparing for his match-up this evening in the main event.

Video Package – NXT Women’s Division

We see a video package showcasing the events leading to Candice LeRae’s number one contender placement for NXT TakeOver 31 to take on Io Shirai. It suddenly stops short as Candice LeRae stops the video and rewinds to April where LeRae continuously got taken out again and again and again. LeRae thanks Shirai for shoving her at the last number one contender match where she realized the Gargano Way was the only way.

We see LeRae’s transformation in NXT from ring attire and looks to style of fighting and how she had her husband and the Gargano Way to thank. “That title will be mine!” LeRae finishes.

We then head into the promo from Io Shirai who states LeRae takes short-cuts (LeRae chimes in that Shirai did the same thing). Io Shirai states she is the NXT Women’s Champion stating Candice is good, but the Gargano Way isn’t enough to beat Io Shirai.

Out first is Candice LeRae as her entrance theme sounds and LeRae heads down the ramp with her pixie wings on and wearing all black. LeRae enters the ring and begins to remove her coat as her competitor’s music sounds and the strobe lights begin. Io Shirai appears at the top of the stage, leans her head back as she walks awkwardly down the ramp throwing her head back and forth, smiling as she circles the ring and rolls under the bottom rope.

The lights return and the bell chimes marking the start of this next match-up for TakeOver 31. Round Standing Switch getting around LeRae. Hip Toss and a Drop Kick by Shirai. LeRae quickly rolls to the outside as the referee begins the count. LeRae looks angered as she returns to the ring. Shirai shoves LeRae into the ropes.

Shirai heads in at LeRae in the corner, LeRae side steps. Monkey Flip by LeRae and Shirai lands on her feet, then heads in for a Kick, LeRae quickly heads to the outside. LeRae on the apron, Shirai slides through trying to take LeRae down with a Sunset Flip, LeRae jumps off the apron and lands on Shirai. Shirai with a Springboard onto LeRae.

Shirai rolls LeRae back into the ring. LeRae gets Stomped and Kicked across the ring by Shirai. Shirai with a Double Foot Stomp followed by both Knees into the shoulder of LeRae. Shirai goes for the cover, LeRae kicks out! LeRae snaps Shirai into the corner. LeRae hits a Backstabber in the corner on Shirai for a nearfall.

Commentary notes that Candice LeRae may have had a slow start due to Johnny Gargano’s loss earlier in the evening to Damian Priest as it was the Gargano’s goal to walk away from TakeOver 31 as the first married NXT Male and Female Champions. Headscissor TakeDown by Shirai, LeRae hits a Lariat and follows with a cover attempt on Shirai.

LeRae locks in an Armbar, Shirai struggles out and LeRae goes for a cover to no avail. The crowd begins to rally behind Shirai. LeRae lifts Shirai, hitting a Backbreaker and a hook of the leg for a nearfall. LeRae lifts Shirai again and slams her into the corner turnbuckle. LeRae waves and then heads charging in on Shirai.

LeRae talks smack to Shirai, Shirai slaps LeRae who knocks Shirai down to the mat. LeRae drags Shirai from corner to corner slamming her head into the turnbuckles. LeRae smiles.

LeRae connects with a Suplex for a nearfall on Shirai. LeRae hooks the leg again for another nearfall! LeRae looking angry, commentary notes she needs to stay focused on the task at hand. LeRae continues to dictate the pace as she keeps control of the match. LeRae charges in on Shirai who side step. LeRae tries to drop on Shirai who rolls out of the way. Shirai finally able to cause injury to LeRae and slow her down. Shirai with a Shoulder Shove, then another.

Shirai drops LeRae in the center of the ring, LeRae hangs on the ropes as Shirai hits a 619. Shirai off the middle of the top rope for a Missile Dropkick and the cover. LeRae kicks out. LeRae drops Shirai face first on the mat. Senton connects to the lower back of Shirai, Springboard by LeRae who is caught with a leg to the midsection by Shirai. Backbreaker by Shirai who heads up top!

LeRae back to her feet, grabs Shirai off the top for a Powerbomb! Double Knees counter by Shirai. LeRae rolls through for a two count cover on Shirai. Open Palm Thrust followed by a German Suplex. LeRae with a Snap German followed by a Back Stabber. LeRae goes for a cover, Shirai gets the shoulder up at the very last second.

Crossface in the center of the ring on LeRae. LeRae rolls through for a pin attempt, Shirai kicks out. LeRae with the Gargano Hold as Shirai struggles to reach out for the ropes. LeRae uses her weight to keep Shirai away from the bottom rope. Shirai continues to struggle, finally grabbing the bottom rope.

The referee counts one, two, three, Candice throws her arm back and hits the referee. Shirai hits a move on LeRae then climbs to the top rope unaware of what happened and Shirai lands awkwardly and accidentally hits the referee as well. The referee is out. LeRae with a kick to the face. LeRae hits the Wicked Stepsister. LeRae goes for the cover and there’s no referee.

Johnny Gargano finishes pulling a referee shirt on and quickly counts, Shirai kicks out at two! Gargano is stunned and angry. Gargano rolls to the outside and grabs the belt saying, “Give it to me, it’s hers!” The referee demands the belt. Gargano states he’s the referee now. They argue “You get out of here, no you get out of here!” LeRae hits Shirai in the face with the championship belt. Shirai kicks out at two!

Gargano throwing a fit in disbelief on the outside. LeRae doing the same inside. LeRae heads up top. Shirai meets LeRae at the top for a Spanish Fly and a Moonsault. Shirai gets the three count pin and win!!

After the Match

We head into replays, we then return to the ring as Io Shirai stands tall when suddenly on the jumbotron, Tony Storm begins, “Io, Io, good to see you. I just wanted to congratulate you on the impressive victory. Oh, I also wanted to make sure that you and everyone else around here know that Tony Storm is BACK in NXT. And it goes without saying that we will turn the place upside down as it always has, and always will be, Tony Time.”

She puts on her sunglasses and Shirai claps for her mockingly as we see a video begin with someone on a motorcycle pulling up to the arena and coming in with their helmet on. The person steps out on to the stage and removes the helmet exposing Ember Moon’s return! We head to commercial!

Backstage Interview – Ashante “Thee” Adonis

Mackenzie Mitchell speaks to Ashante “Thee” Adonis backstage who states he’s sick of seeing people take advantage of a situation and he respects Swerve. Adonis then goes on to state this is all about him and his swag is on 1000 as this is his “Richual R-I-C-H-U-A-L it’s 205 from the 215 because when the money speaks, it’s show time.” We head to commercial.

Promos air for both competitors as a video package airs with events leading up to tonight’s main event NXT TakeOver 31 Main Event match-up for the NXT Championship between Finn Balor and Kyle O’Reilly

Kyle O’Reilly heads to the stage from the wings, he hugs each of his Undisputed Era brothers, Adam Cole stating “You got this!” as Undisputed Era sounds in the arena and Kyle O’Reilly poses at the top of the stage! O’Reilly makes his way down the ramp and heads to the ring finishing his entrance as he circles the ring and shakes out his limbs in preparation for this match.

We see Finn Balor walking backstage with his NXT Championship title around his waist and his leather jacket on as his music sounds and the smoke goes off and Balor’s entrance theme sounds. Vic states, “and here comes the Prince.” Balor stops and poses as he points directly into the camera then continues towards the ring where his opponent awaits him. The two stare one another down as Balor stops at the bottom of the ramp, then climbs up the stairs quickly and poses on the apron as he poses on the top turnbuckle and the spotlight shines on the Prince!

Balor enters the ring and the two competitors stare each other down once more. The match is officially announced. Balor removes his leather jacket as he’s announced. Finally the referee takes the title belt, holds it above his head, he then signals for the bell. The bell rings and this main event match up is officially underway!!

Both men circle one another and finally lock up. Immediately Balor gets a Side Headlock on O’Reilly who shoves Balor into the ropes, Balor refuses to let go as they go down to the mat. O’Reilly and Balor back to their feet, O’Reilly finally shoves Balor off the ropes, only to be taken down again, Balor locking the Side Headlock right back in. Shoulders down for a moment, count of one. Not much action early on, Balor refusing to let go.

Balor goes up and over, O’Reilly turns it into a Cross Arm-Breaker, Balor immediately grabs the bottom rope. Both men back to their feet. O’Reilly exploits the right arm and shoulder of Balor. O’Reilly stands strong.

Sharp Knees into the misection of Balor by O’Reilly. Kyle targets the left arm of Finn, grinding the shoulder and elbow. O’Reilly torques the arm behind Finn and drills it with knees over and over. O’Reilly holds Finn down until the Champion rolls through and dropkicks him right on the money. Balor kicks the back of O’Reilly and then bends his arm and mocks him by pretending to play guitar with it.

Balor forces Kyle to the corner and chops him, then whips him to the opposite corner and hits a running chop. He does it again, then on the third attempt O’Reilly bounces out with a knee to the gut. O’Reilly throws Finn up and kicks him in the chest. O’Reilly hits a rolling butterfly suplex, then another, and a facebuster for a two-count.

Kyle grabs the back but Finn elbows himself free, only for O’Reilly to unload a flurry of elbows, forearms, and knees to force him back. Balor connects with a spin kick to the gut and Kyle collapses, rolling around and holding his sides. The referee steps in to check on Kyle but Finn pushes him aside and kicks the ribs over and over until the referee forces him back.

yle grabs the back but Finn elbows himself free, only for O’Reilly to unload a flurry of elbows, forearms, and knees to force him back. Balor connects with a spin kick to the gut and Kyle collapses, rolling around and holding his sides. The referee steps in to check on Kyle but Finn pushes him aside and kicks the ribs over and over until the referee forces him back.

Balor continues to work on the ribs and Irish whips Kyle hard into the buckles and he collapses again. Balor applies a camel clutch and grinds on those ribs, then jumps and lands an elbow drop to the back. Balor goes to an abdominal stretch but O’Reilly hits a hip toss. Kyle hits a running knee to intercept Balor, then lands a tiger suplex for a near-fall!

The suplex and bridging pin hurt O’Reilly ribs, so Finn is able to get back on top and hit a spinning elbow drop, followed by a slingblade. The Champion looks for the bullet dropkick but Kyle dropkicks Finn’s shin! O’Reilly kicks Finn’s shin again but Balor gets him in the abdominal stretch and Kyle is bleeding from the mouth. Balor attempts 1916 but O’Reilly counters into a kneebar.

Finn transitions out of the kneebar into a Boston crab and O’Reilly screams in pain, the blood dripping from his mouth, and he gets to the bottom rope. Balor stomps the back of O’Reilly while telling him he does this every week, this is no problem for him. Finn face washes O’Reilly in the corner but Kyle grabs his boot, shoves him back and punches him. Balor lands a Pele kick but O’Reilly rebounds off the ropes and hits a lariat and both men are down!

Balor looks like he’s going to tap, Balor is slugging away at O’Reilly. Balor struggles for the ropes. Balor finally grabs the bottom rope for the break. The crowd begins to chant, “NXT!” Double Foot Stomp to the mid-section of O’Reilly. A Running Knee followed by a German Suplex finishing off with a Double Foot Stomp. The crowd pops! Finn Balor first to his feet, bleeding from the mouth.

Coup De Gras off the top for the cover and the three count pin and win to retain the title by Finn Balor!

After the Match

Finn’s mouth is bleeding after the match and the announcers say he may have a broken jaw. We see replays of the great main event and it seems the final knee in the corner is what hurt Finn’s jaw. Balor approaches O’Reilly after the match and helps him up.

They shake hands and the show looks to be over but the camera turns around and Ridge Holland is standing behind the barricade, holding Adam Cole on his shoulder. He drops Cole over the barricade and Fish and Strong run down to check on him with O’Reilly; Cole’s eyes are bruised and his shirt is ripped. Holland leaves as The Undisputed Era look for a doctor.
