As noted, WWE held their first-ever NXT U.K. TakeOver event on Saturday, as they ran the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool, England for their NXT U.K. TakeOver: Blackpool live special on the WWE Network.
During the show, multiple titles changed hands. In the opening contest of the show, James Drake and Zack Gibson defeated Moustache Mountain — Tyler Bate and Trent Seven — in the finals of the NXT U.K. Tag-Team Championship Tournament. With the victory, Drake and Gibson became the first-ever NXT U.K. Tag-Team Champions.
In the very next match, an injured Travis Banks who had been attacked by Jordan Devlin, was replaced by last-minute surprise substitute Finn Balor. The match would see Balor get the “W” over his former wrestling student / trainee after hitting his Coup de Grace finisher for the pin.
As far as newsworthy cameos are concerned, Mae Young Classic standouts Jazzy Gabert and Kay Lee Ray were shown sitting in the front row during the show. Each has signed with WWE. Additionally, former Rugby player from West Yorkshire and new NXT Superstar Luke Menzies was shown in the crowd during the show.
The co-main event of the show saw Mae Young Classic 2018 winner Toni Storm upset NXT U.K. Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley, defeating her to become the new title-holder.
Finally, following the conclusion of the main event, WALTER made his NXT U.K. debut, staring down WWE U.K. Champion Pete Dunne after his victory over Joe Coffey in the main event of the show.
