So apparently Vince McMahon got a good laugh out of the reaction to the finish of the WWE Universal Championship main event between Seth Rollins and “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt at the WWE Hell In A Cell 2019 pay-per-view before being forced to change things up as a result of the overwhelming negativity.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that even though the crowd reaction to the Hell in a Cell main event finish was largely negative with people yelling “AEW”, “Refund” and “Restart the match”, Vince McMahon was apparently laughing backstage at the reaction and not perceiving it as anything negative.
However, the next night on Raw, there seemed to be a directive to not mention the match or the finish until deep into the third hour. Rollins was likely kept off of the show because the belief was that he’d be booed loudly by the audience.
McMahon himself was responsible for the finish as his idea was that he didn’t want Bray Wyatt losing so early during his push but also wanted Seth Rollins as one of his champions going into the draft.
The original finish was supposed to see Wyatt take a gimmicked bump off the top of the cage and be unable to continue the match, leading to a stoppage. However, he would have popped back up shortly after the match was stopped and take out Rollins with the Mandible Claw.
