WWE has laid the ground work to do one of two things — begin the end of Rey Mysterio’s career with the company, or start up a new main event level rivalry with “The Monday Night Messiah” Seth Rollins, a decision that is essentially up to the future WWE Hall of Famer and one that he will make largely with his son Dominic Gutierrez in mind.
Mysterio’s injury angle that ran on Raw last week is due to the fact that his contract with WWE is coming up due.
As of a week ago, he had not agreed or signed any sort of extension and at this point, it’s up in the air whether he actually leaves or not.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter notes that one of the biggest priorities for Mysterio is to secure his son’s future and he probably doesn’t want to do anything that would upset WWE as it could negatively affect his son’s career.
WWE also has him on a very lucrative contract but the word is that with the COVID-19 pandemic, they are currently not giving anyone raises like they did earlier this year and in 2019.
By running the injury angle with Seth Rollins it opened up two options – to write him off in case he isn’t back, or to set up a program with Rollins if he decides to stay.
