As noted, WWE Hall Of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin welcomed Edge and Christian for an in-depth interview on his Steve Austin Show podcast, where the trio spoke in-depth about the Montreal Screwjob from the 1997 WWE Survivor Series pay-per-view.
In addition to the highlights we posted earlier where Edge and Christian spoke at length about the infamous incident, which featured Vince McMahon “screwing” Bret Hart by having Shawn Michaels defeat him with his own Sharpshooter finisher without letting him know ahead of time, “The Texas Rattlesnake” also sounded off on the subject.
Austin spoke about being in the building that iconic evening, describing what the backstage atmosphere was like behind-the-curtain when everything was going down in the ring and at ringside live on pay-per-view television.
“It was weird, man, because Davy ‘Boy’ [Smith] was going crazy,” Austin recalled. “Owen was going crazy. That whole backstage thing, and, I mean, I was around, but I wasn’t catching all of it.”
Austin continued, talking about the infamous incident backstage after the screwjob, which saw Bret Hart knock out WWE Chairman Vince McMahon with a single punch.
“It’s a famous thing where Vince was going to walk into the dressing room and at least say something to Bret, give him his shot, and took the shot,” said Austin. “It was just weird coming off of that because, man, what is going to happen to this company? I mean, Bret was our world champion. I was a huge Shawn [Michaels] fan, but Bret was the guy at that time, and so I was thinking, ‘this is going downhill! You can’t fire your world champion.'”
In our previous post from this episode of The Steve Austin Show, Edge and Christian spoke about being new guys in the company at the time and being worried that WWE was going to go out of business as a result of the incident.
Apparently “Stone Cold” felt the same way.
“Dude, it was still like a shoot,” said Austin. “I mean, we’ve all known it’s a work, but at that level, it’s a shoot. And, man, I didn’t know what was going to happen. I thought the territory was going to go down.”
