Tony Khan believes in his product, and stands by it.
The CEO & President of All Elite Wrestling (AEW) took to social media to respond to a claim made by longtime pro wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
Khan referenced a tweet Meltzer wrote this week where he spoke about it being a bad decision to watch New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) before any other promotion.
“Never watch NJPW right before any other promotion,” Meltzer wrote. “Always watch it last.”
He continued, “I have that rule for a reason. Watch NJPW and everything after looks way too contrived in comparison.”
“We’ve tried to set a standard by frequently opening with great matches we believe can stand up beside whatever you watched prior,” Khan wrote in response to the comments from Meltzer. “Like Kenny v. Pac, Nick v. Fenix [and] many others.”
“I enjoyed the opening tag tonight too,” Khan added. “Watch whatever you want before Dynamite, I’ll take my chances.”
Khan would fire off another tweet, making sure pro wrestling fans and Meltzer himself had it clear that he wasn’t intending to disrespect his comments or NJPW as much as he was standing up for the quality of his own product at AEW, which he clearly strongly believes in — and should.
“Also I wasn’t trying to dunk on or disrespect Dave (I respect him a lot) or minimize his opinions (which I often agree with),” he wrote in an additional tweet. “He’s entitled to watch any show he wants in any order. I was just surprised that’s his rule, and surprised he’d imply everyone should watch in that order.”
