The build-up to the 31st event in NXT TakeOver chronology picked up steam on Wednesday night's episode of the weekly black-and-gold brand show.

The special "NXT TakeOff To TakeOver" edition of the show this week featured a cryptic vignette airing to promote something taking place at the upcoming NXT TakeOver 31 event.

During Wednesday night's show on the USA Network, a segment aired in night-vision that saw an unidentified person smashing a case containing NXT Championships while stating the following:

"I'm not sure what happened. I helped create something out of my own blood. Years and years of dedication -- only to be taken over by paper champions. These NXT championships have been in isolation for far too long. Now I've come back to take what is mine."

The video then concluded with "10.4.2020" flashing on the screen, which is of course the date for the upcoming NXT TakeOver 31 special event.

After the WWE NXT show wrapped up this week, WWE released the segment on their official YouTube channel, as well as on their various social media platforms. The description for the video reads as follows:

"A mysterious warning for NXT: An unknown insurgent declares they’re coming back to the black-and-gold brand to take what’s theirs."

Thus far, the following matches are being advertised for NXT TakeOver 31, which streams live via the WWE Network on Sunday, October 4, 2020:
