Will Ospreay Beats Kota Ibushi For IWGP Title At NJPW Sakura Genesis, Next Title Program Set Up After Match (Videos)

A new IWGP World Heavyweight Champion was crowned this morning.

At the NJPW Sakura Genesis event on Sunday morning at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan, Will Ospreay defeated Kota Ibushi to capture the title.

The New Japan Pro Wrestling veteran pinned Ibushi with the Stormbreaker in the main event of the show, which streamed live via the NJPW World digital subscription service.

After the match wrapped up, a post-match angle was shot to set up the new program that the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship will be centered around.

Ospreay taunted Ibushi as he was helped to the back after the match and then called out Kazuchika Okada. Okada came out, but before the two could set a match up, Shingo Takagi came out and reminded everyone that Okada lost in the opening round of the New Japan Cup.

This led to a title match being set up between Ospreay and Takagi, with Okada apparently on deck. “First, Shingo,” said Ospreay. “Then, I’m coming for you, Okada!”
