Independent wrestler Vince Steele tragically passed away on Sunday while working an event for Brii Combination Wrestling in New Jersey. At the time, it was reported that he suffered a “medical emergency” but it wasn’t clear if the issue came up before his match or during it.
More details have now emerged from those who were in attendance and backstage. Steele was involved in a tag team match when he collapsed in a corner. The referee immediately called for the bell while another ref began administering CPR as other officials called 911. Police officers arrived within minutes and took over performing CPR while also using a defibrillator in order to try and resuscitate him.
An ambulance and paramedics were on the scene approximately 23 minutes after the call and took over his care, transporting him to a local hospital. The promotion announced that the event would not go on and fans left but talent remained on scene until they received word that Steele had passed away at which many of them headed to the hospital.
