WWE Survivor Series 2020 -- Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre

WWE Changes Direction For Roman Reigns’ Universal Title Run, Plans For Survivor Series Main Event

WWE’s original plans for Roman Reigns were not for “The Tribal Chief” to have an extended run with the WWE Universal Championship upon returning to the company as a heel following an extended hiatus that saw him miss this year’s WrestleMania 36 pay-per-view.

The news was revealed by longtime editor of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer, during the latest episode of his Wrestling Observer Radio program for members at his website, F4WOnline.com.

No other information was discussed so it’s unclear who WWE had in mind to take the title off of Roman before they changed course.

This coming Sunday’s match with Reigns squaring off against WWE Champion Drew McIntyre was also brought up and the suggestion was that the match will likely end in a way where the loser is protected.

The reason for this is because WWE doesn’t want Reigns or McIntyre to lose cleanly to the other, as they want to keep each champion as strong as possible going into and coming out of this year’s WWE Survivor Series pay-per-view.

One scenario that was thrown out there was for Randy Orton to interfere in the match, as he currently doesn’t have a spot anywhere on the current lineup for this Sunday night’s WWE Survivor Series PPV, as the Raw men’s team is already finalized ahead of the traditional elimination match between the Raw and SmackDown brands.

We will keep you posted as more updates continue to surface regarding WWE’s plans for Roman Reigns and Drew McIntyre going forward, as well as any news related to this Sunday night’s WWE Survivor Series 2020 pay-per-view featuring the “Final Farewell” and 30th Anniversary special appearance by The Undertaker.
