WWE Friday Night SmackDown RESULTS (1/29/2021)

Show Opening

Are you ready?? The clock hits eight o’clock on the dot as we head into the opening for the January 29, 2021 edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown!!

WWE Then… Now… Forever. followed by the WWE logo sends us into the WWE ThunderDome II at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL! We head into the ThunderDome II as Michael Cole and Corey Graves remind us we are just TWO days away from the WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view which airs Sunday, January 31, 2021 LIVE on pay-per-view!!

In-Ring – Daniel Bryan

“Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!” is heard from every screen in every seat in the ThunderDome II as Daniel Bryan stands inside the squared circle in the center of Tropicana Field Arena! Bryan starts off by stating as well, that this is the start of Royal Rumble weekend! He also shares that as his daughter would put it, we are just “two wake ups” away from the pay-per-view event!

Bryan then discusses his accomplishments in the WWE, as he notes that he has one accomplishment that he has yet to achieve and that is winning the Royal Rumble and going on to Wrestlemania to main event the show for the WWE Championship! He then continues on to share he doesn’t know how many more title runs he has in him, but right now thanks to Chad Gable and Otis, he is in the best shape of his life, his cardio can go on for days, and he is mentally focused!

AJ Styles Interrupts

AJ Styles music sounds in the arena as he and his larger than life buddy, Omos, make their way to the stage. Styles and Omos make their way down the ramp and enter the ring as Bryan notes that Styles is currently on the RAW roster, and this is WWE Friday Night SmackDown. Bryan knows both brands are competing in the Rumble but this is SmackDown, AJ is a RAW Superstar and while Bryan is glad to see him, what are you doing here? AJ says this is the house he built. Styles tells Bryan that Bryan has a sports coat on and looks far from “ready” to compete for anything this weekend. Bryan smiles and looks down at his clothes as Styles continues.

AJ continues on to state that we will see him throw 29 other Superstars over the top rope to earn his spot in the WrestleMania main event. Omos says AJ is here for the quarterly Brand-To-Brand Invitational. AJ reminds us of the rules and says he didn’t make them. AJ says he’s the gatekeeper of RAW and everyone is trying to follow in his footsteps since he declared his spot. AJ says that didn’t work because they had to go through him first but he crushed their hopes and dreams.

AJ continues on to state that he wonders if Bryan is a General Manager again. AJ says it’s almost like Bryan already has one foot out the door of WWE. Bryan says he doesn’t have one foot out the door of anything, especially something he loves as much as WWE. To prove that, Bryan says he challenges AJ to a match. AJ says he’d love to get one more Rumble warm-up tonight against Bryan on SmackDown. On that note, we see Styles as he charges and Bryan goes down.

As Bryan goes to get back up, Styles friend Omos is standing in his way, shaking his head. Bryan stands back up as AJ smiles. Bryan says if AJ was a real man and had any guts, he’d come out for their match tonight with Omos. AJ and Omos go to leave. Bryan says with or without Omos, he’s still going to kick AJ’s ass. Bryan drops the mic and gets a “yes!” chant going as Bryan and Omos head to the ramp.

Quick Announcement

We are informed that still to come, “The Final Showdown” between Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns. With that, we return to the announcer’s table where Cole and Graves hype tonight’s show.

Progressive Match Flo Replay

Next we head into tonight’s WWE Friday Night SmackDown Progressive Match Flo replay from last week show. In the clip we see how Bianca Belair defeated Bayley in her own “Ultimate Athlete Obstacle Course Challenge” where Bayley was a sore loser. Bayley chose to show poor sportsmanship as she proceeded to attack Belair at the end of the course.

Backstage Interview – Bayley

We head backstage after the clip where Kayla Braxton is standing with Bayley. Braxton starts off as she brings up Belair’s win last week, but Bayley instantly cuts her off, saying she’s better than that. Bayley then notes that the segment ended with her beating Belair at ringside, which she can do again to remind us who is the bestEST.

Bayley informs Braxton that she watched Belair’s WWE Chronicle episode and gives Belair props. Bayley says what stuck out the most is how Belair has run away from all her problems throughout her life, but she’s not running from this, she’s not winning at the Rumble, and she’s not winning tonight. Bayley says Belair can crawl back into the dark-EST hole of her life after Bayley beats her again tonight. With that, we head to commercial break!

Bianca Belair vs. Bayley

As we return from commercial break, the first match of the evening is ready to take place as both competitors already made their entrances to the ring during the commercial break. Bayley is standing inside the ring on one side, Belair is clapping and flipping her hair back and forth as the two trash talk one another inaudibly as the commentary team notes the women that are already in the Women’s Royal Rumble this weekend. We return to the ring where the referee signals for the bell. The bell rings and the first official match of the evening is underway!

Immediately heading into the match, Belair rushes Bayley into the corner of the ring slamming Bayley into the ring post. The referee warns Belair who puts her hands up in retreat. The two lock up in the center of the ring where Belair uses her brute strength to slam Bayley to the canvas once again. Belair with a Suplex to take Bayley to the canvas once more as she covers for the pin, Bayley kicks out. Bayley exits to the apron as she shouts to Belair “This is MY show!” and the referee tells Bayley to re-enter the ring.

As Bayley returns to the ring, she gains control over the match as she slams Belair’s head into the canvas and then nearly knocks Belair’s head off as she takes her down once more for a cover of her own. Belair kicks out. Bayley again sends Belair shoulder first into the turnbuckle and rolls her into a take down. Bayley grabs the braid on Belair’s head and starts shouting, “Ding-Dong! Ding-Dong!” as she whips Belair’s head. This sends a fire through Belair who shouts back, “You touched my hair!” Belair gains control in the match as she lands multiple blows on Bayley.

The EST gets a Kip Up followed by a Standing Moonsault for the cover, Bayley shifts her weight and gets her foot up on the bottom rope to stop the pin as Bayley quickly exits the ring and holds her back as she leans against the announcer’s table and we return to commercial break.

We once again return from the commercial break and there’s more back and forth between the two. Belair is in control once again as she pushes Bayley into the corner, and follows up with a powerbomb. Bianca then throws Bayley over her shoulders, and is able to cover for a near fall. At this point, Bayley climbs to the second rope to no avail. Bayley again climbs to the top and landed an elbow to the shoulder blades of Belair. Belair struggles to get to her feet.

Bayley then tried a number of pinning combinations, which Bianca powered out of and once with a Bridge Out. Bianca landed an elbow to escape a backslide attempt. Bayley then tried for a Glam Slam, but her shoulder gave out. Bianca lifts Bayley one handed and then lands a Kiss Of Death for the three count pin and win!

Winner: Bianca Belair

After the match

Belair stands tall in the center of the ring for her victory as her music sounds.

In-Ring Interview

Immediately following the match, Bianca is interviewed and asked how it feels to have the greatest week of her life in the WWE. Bianca said she won’t apologize for being herself, she will never apologize for that. She then states that Bayley isn’t her role model, but proving herself to someone who was champion for 380 days is something spectacular and calls it the biggest win of her career. Belair finishes by stating that the only thing that can top that is a win at Royal Rumble and the EST moving on to Wrestlemania! Her music sounds once again.

Quick Announcement

Commentary reminds us that later tonight we still have Owens and Reigns’ final confrontation and AJ Styles vs. Daniel Bryan.

As we head backstage we see Cesaro walking the hall as he runs into AJ and Amos standing backstage as well.

King Corbin vs. Dominik Mysterio

Out first is King Corbin as his entrance theme sounds in the arena and Corbin begins to make his way down the ramp towards the ring. Commentary notes that it’s time for “royalty” to join us on SmackDown. Suddenly, Dominik Mysterio appears and attacks Corbin while he is making his entrance. The two brawl down the ramp before the match even starts. Graves says Mysterio is “classless” as we head to commercial break!

As we return from the commercial break, the match officially gets underway and we see Dominik avoiding Corbin by using his speed to escape the King. Mysterio successfully lands a knee to Corbin on the apron. Next, Mysterio lands a Splash onto Corbin in the corner. Corbin paced around the ring and talked trash to Rey Mysterio on commentary instead of focusing on his opponent, Rey’s son. He then entered the ring and lands a Back Suplex on Dominik. Corbin then again lands a second Back Suplex!

Corbin continues to control the match as he makes his way up the turnbuckle where Dominik lands a Dropkick followed by a Slingshot Splash from the apron back into the ring for a two count cover. Corbin kicks out just in time. Both men back to their feet and Dominik looks to capitalize as he hits 619, but Corbin catches Dominik and pulled him into the ring. They attempted a couple of lucha moves, and Corbin had to save Dominick both times with his power. Dominick eventually landed a nice tornado DDT. Corbin avoids a Dropkick from the corner, and lands a big right hand.

Rey is giving Dominik hand signals telling him to “pick up the pace” according to Cole on commentary. Dominik is showing emotion on his face and we hear Cole and Graves discuss the teaching of Dominik. Corbin then follows up with End of Days for the three count pin and win.

Winner: King Corbin

After the Match

Immediately following the match, King Corbin stands tall inside the ring as Dominik retreats to the corner of the ring holding his mid-section. Corbin goes to exit the ring near the announcer’s table where Rey was still sitting. Corbin sees Rey go towards the ring and before Rey is able to enter the ring, Corbin grabs him, but Rey is able to avoid Corbin’s attack attempt and send Corbin flying into the ring post. Rey then heads over to check on Dominik.

Backstage – Big E

As we head backstage, Big E walks up to Sonya Deville and smoothly slides a dollar to Deville, then asks her what his number in the Rumble. E then sweetened the deal with an Arby’s coupon.

At this point, the team of Miz and Morrison walk up and asked where Adam Pearce was. Sonya said someone pulled some strings and got him suspended for a week. Miz states sarcastically that “pulling strings to get what you want” is just a nasty thing to do. Morrison then attempts to say something clever, Sonya takes her leave.

Big E attempts to leave too, but Morrison and Miz stop him short and proceed to mock him. A brawl ensues, and Big E easily gets the better of both men as we head to commercial break.

Video Clip – Sasha Banks

Next, we head into a video clip showing how Sasha Banks defeated Reginald last week.

Backstage – Sasha Banks

Sasha encounters Kalisto backstage and gave him a hug. Reginald walked up and presented her a bottle of wine, and said she should pair it with losing her championship. Sasha asked him if he freelanced, because he should find Carmella a wine for when she has a broken jaw. She then told Reginald that he could find a wine for himself, because he looked like he could use a drink.

Video Package

We head into a video package highlighting the events leading up to the Kevin Owens vs. Roman Reigns “Last Man Standing” Match set for the Royal Rumble event this Sunday. As the video package ends, we head to commercial break!

Backstage – Sami Zayn

As we return from commercial break, we head backstage where Sami Zayn is talking to Shinsuke Nakamura about the “grand conspiracy” that caused him to lose his title. Shinsuke seems less than interested and chose to blow Zayn off, adding he would see him in the Royal Rumble.

Video Interview/Conversation – Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns

Michael Cole welcomes Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens who are sitting in separate areas but are on split screen. Owens starts off by stating that he already beat Reigns twice, but he plans to do it again this weekend at Royal Rumble pay-per-view and as many times as he has to until Owens becomes the Universal Champion again. He adds in that Reigns may have family members there this weekend, but nothing is going to stop Owens from getting up again, and again, and again. Nothing will stop Owens from continuing to beat Reigns.

Paul Heyman speaks for Reigns and demands Owens not speak to the “tribal chief” that way, stressing that Owens will speak to him with respect. At this point, Owens asked Reigns if he was going to let Heyman recycle material when talking about him. Reigns asked Owens about his father. He said he is a great man, and he should be careful about where he’s going.

Reigns continues on to ask Owens if he was a smart man, and Owens answered yes. He then asked Owens why he wasn’t smart enough to understand that he’s not in his league. He said he’s not a King, a Knight, or a Bishop, he’s a pawn that doesn’t know his place. Reigns said everything revolves around him, and Owens needs to understand that. If Owens is that big of a fool, then his father is a fool, and his Grandfather is a fool.

Owens then said he saw where Owens was going with this, after he saw what he said about his Grandfathers, and how much they meant to him. Reigns then continued that he would meet his Grandfathers again one day, and they would tell him what a disgrace he was for not acknowledging him as the tribal chief. Owens replied that his Grandfathers would only want him to recognize him for what he is, and that’s an insecure jackass. He said Roman shows up every week and plays a community theatre version of a Mafia Boss tough guy, but that’s not who he is.

Owens got fired up and said he would expose Roman for what he really was, and show his entire family that he was someone they could be proud of. After The Royal Rumble, they would still be proud of him, except now he would be the Universal Champion. Reigns cut off his camera part way through Owens tirade, and Owens ripped off his microphone and left when he was done.

Daniel Bryan vs. AJ Styles (w/ Omos)

As we return to the arena, we first get the entrance for Daniel Bryan who comes out with the fans chanting, “Yes! Yes! Yes!” as Bryan makes his way down the ramp towards the ring. Out next, AJ Styles makes his way out, accompanied by his larger than life friend, Omos. As Styles makes his way up to the ring, he turns to Omos and points towards the back, telling Omos to remain backstage for the match. With that, we head to commercial break.

As we return from the commercial break, the referee signals for the bell to get this match-up started. The bell rings and we are officially underway with this match! To start things off, the two competitors take turns applying Headlocks on one another. We see the announce team welcome Cesaro who joins in on commentary. They continued to go back and forth, with Styles landing a Dropkick on Bryan. Bryan then retaliates with a Suplex.

Sami Zayn Films Documentary During Match

At one point, out of nowhere, we see Sami Zayn as he makes his way out along with the documentary crew in the middle of Styles and Bryan’s match. Bryan just stops to look at him, and Styles looks over and then knocks him off the turnbuckles. As we head to commercial break, Styles throws Bryan into the steel stairs at ringside.

We return from the commercial break where we hear Cesaro speak French to mock the announce team. Back in the ring, Bryan jumps off the top turnbuckle and hits a Clothesline on Styles. Bryan then connects with multiple Kicks in the corner of the ring, followed by a Top Rope Head Scissors that leads into a cover attempt for a near fall. Sami Zayn had a number of signs at ringside with his documentary crew. Styles caught one of Bryan’s kicks and threw with a dragon screw leg whip.

AJ set up Bryan in the corner and kicked his knee out. He then applied the Calf Crusher, and Bryan had to drag himself to the bottom rope. Bryan sent Styles to the apron in the corner. AJ shoved him away and went for a Phenomenal Forearm, but Bryan trapped his arm on the way down.

Next, Bryan lands a Butterfly Suplex and applied an arm bar, and then transitioned into the LeBell Lock. Big E walked out as Styles reached the ropes. He then landed a hard lariat on Sami Zayn on the floor. He then threw Zayn into Cesaro, who kicked Big E in the face. Daniel Bryan then splashed Styles, Cesaro and Zayn on the floor. Zayn then entered the ring and attacked Bryan, and caused a DQ.

Winner: Daniel Bryan

After the Match

A brawl ensues following the match as we head to commercial break.

Six-Man Match-Up
AJ Styles, Cesaro, & Sami Zayn vs. Big E, Daniel Bryan, & Shinsuke Nakamura

As we return from the commercial break, the match is joined already in progress. To start things off, we see Cesaro hit an Uppercut on Nakamura. Nakamura counters with a German Suplex of his own. Next we see Big E tag himself in, As Big E enters the ring, he proceeds to hit an Uppercut followed by multiple body blows. At this point, we see Zayn tag in and Big E takes it to Zayn. We then see multiple quick tags, keeping Bryan off guard until we see Styles tag in. Styles starts to focus on Bryan’s injured leg as we head to commercial break.

As we return from commercial break, Cesaro is the legal man in and taking it to Daniel Bryan as he too focuses on Bryan’s injured leg. Cesaro swings Bryan around followed by a Half-Crab, Bryan is in visible pain! Styles tags in once again and continues the brutal beating on Bryan inside the ring. Bryan looks for the come up as he hits a Missile Dropkick allowing a bit of separation and gives Bryan the chance to make the tag to Big E.

Big E enters the ring and proceeds to hit Belly-to-Belly Suplexes on anyone that comes into contact with him! Next, Big E looks for a Lariat, but Cesaro is able to duck out and counters with a Big Springboard Corkscrew Uppercut! Big E looks to make the finish when suddenly Miz and Morrison interrupt the match and look to attack Big E.

Winner: Big E, Daniel Bryan, & Shinsuke Nakamura (Presumably By Disqualification)

After the Match

Technically, no winner was officially announced after the match.

Miz and Morrison beat Big E down until suddenly we see Otis Dozovic come running in and he makes the save! Otis then hits the Caterpillar as we head to the final commercial break of the evening!

AJ Styles, Cesaro, John Morrison, Sami Zayn, & the Miz vs. Big E, Daniel Bryan, Otis Dozovic, Sheamus, & Shinsuke Nakamura

Apparently more people join the match after each commercial break, a little prelude to the Royal Rumble! Anyhow, back from the commercial break, and we see Miz inside the ring attacking Bryan. The referee begins the count and both men end up back inside the ring. Once inside the ring, We see an attempt to finish the match with a Figure Four Leglock, however Bryan is able to break free! Miz tags in and immediately looks for the Blue Thunder Driver to no avail.

Next we see Morrison enter the ring as he makes the tag. Once in the ring, Morrison proceeds to hit several Elbows and a few good Stomps. Styles looks for the tag and once in the ring, he takes it to Bryan who looks tired at this point! Bryan attempts a final flurry and both men end up down inside the ring. Suddenly Sheamus makes the save, come on in and join the match!

Sheamus tags in and cleans house, Irish Curse into the cloverleaf but Morrison breaks it up with a crescent kick! The match breaks down into “everybody do something cool” territory, Sami charges in but Sheamus is ready and hits a Brogue Kick on Zayn for the three count pin and win!!

Winner: Big E, Daniel Bryan, Otis Dozovic, Sheamus, & Shinsuke Nakamura

After the Match

Following the match, Sheamus is being attacked when suddenly who else but Braun Strowman makes the save!

Strowman hits a Chokeslam on Cesaro, followed by a Running Powerslam on Zayn! Cesaro gets Powerslammed as well. Strowman looking like a Monster Among Broken Men (see what I did there? lol) to end tonight’s Go-Home Edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown!
