Welcome to Mexico City!

Happy Independence Day Week to Mexico! We open with an aerial shot of beautiful Mexico City, then cut to video from the Penta/Fenix No. 1 Contender’s Match — fantastic match, by the way, folks, and I highly recommend you see it. It sets up tonight’s main event, which will see World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns defend against the man with zero fear, Penta. We’re welcomed to the arena by our commentary team of Joe Tessitore and Corey Graves.

Earlier Today

We’re treated to various clips from, presumably, earlier today. Roman Reigns is shown arriving by private jet, while Penta is shown riding a horse amongst a jovial crowd, which elicits a huge pop from the arena crowd.

Segment in the Ring: New Women’s World Champion Stephanie Vaquer, Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio

The true King of the Luchadores comes out to a great welcome; the arena sings enthusiastically along to his theme and shows El Rey a ton of love. Rey gets on the mic and boy howdy, this crowd is hot. He welcomes us to Raw and points out that this is the first time WWE has held Raw here in 15 years. Rey speaks in both English and Spanish, so I’ll miss some of this — apologies for that. Rey tells the crowd how proud he is before continuing in Spanish. He’s joined in the ring by Raw General Manager Adam Pearce. “Which we just saw this weekend…from city after city…and there’s one moment that really stood out that I’d like to share with you guys.” That’s the English portion, folks. We then get clips of Liv Morgan losing her title to Stephanie Vaquer, with some assistance from special referee Becky Lynch, in Santiago, Chile, this past Saturday. We’re told the entire match is available on Club WWE. We cut back to the ring, where the crowd pops big for the new champ. Rey addresses the crowd and Pearce, then speaks in Spanish before calling out the new Women’s World Champion, “La Primera” Stephanie Vaquer!

Vaquer makes her way out to the ring and gets on the mic after hugging Rey and soaking up a lot of love from Mexico City. She’s all smiles as she tells everyone she got her title back. She, like Rey, speaks more Spanish than English, so I’ll cover what I can. “It was the joy of my life to win back my title in my home, Chile. But it’s an honor to say in my first language, I am the World Champion.” Hey, I know a few words! Former champion Liv Morgan interrupts, accompanied by Dominik Mysterio. Morgan gets on the mic and congratulates Vaquer on being “the biggest hypocrite I ever met in my entire life.” She takes exception to Vaquer celebrating with Morgan’s title, then yells at the crowd in Spanish to shut up. Morgan goes on to say she got screwed Saturday and Vaquer knows it. “But it’s okay. It’s okay, because at the end of the day we both know…I am still the greatest Women’s World Champion of all time.”

Morgan then turns her attention to Rey. “I’ve already accepted that you’re Dominik’s deadbeat daddy, but you’ve really hit an all-time low, hanging around someone like this puta.” That gets a huge, hot reaction from the Mexico City crowd. Dominik gets on the mic and tries to speak, but the crowd loudly drowns him out. He does manage to call his father trash in Spanish before declaring that he and Morgan are what real champions look like. Rey fires back: “Didn’t you lose your championship yesterday? In fact, let’s go back and watch.” We get clips from last night’s AAA Mega Championship Main Event Match at Triplemanía 34 Night Two, where El Grande Americano defeated Dominik — with an assist from Rey, who stepped in as referee after the original official went down. Dominik asks if this is how Rey wants to play it, then issues a challenge: Dominik & Morgan versus Rey & Vaquer. Pearce objects, reminding Dominik that Rey isn’t medically cleared. Dominik calls it a fake injury and says Rey was medically cleared enough to screw him over last night. He’s interrupted by the new AAA Mega Champion, El Grande Americano! HUGE pop! Americano makes his way down to the ring, and it looks like we’ve got ourselves a match! Adam Pearce gets on the mic and speaks in Spanish, setting this match up and sending us to a break!

Mixed Tag Team Match: Women’s World Champion Stephanie Vaquer & AAA Mega Champion El Grande Americano vs. Dominik Mysterio & Liv Morgan

We return from break at 8:22pm with this match already under way — so we’re going to have to use that as our match marker for the start, folks. We find Americano taking it to Dom in the ring, firing up the crowd with every punch. Dom eventually retreats to his corner and tags in Morgan, who shoves Americano to try to disrespect and provoke him. This brings Vaquer flying in over the top rope, setting up a stretch of the women battling it out. Vaquer’s still on fire, hot off her win just days ago. At one point, Dirty Dom dirtily pulls down the middle rope as Vaquer looks to rebound off it, causing her to spill to the outside, all unseen by the ref. This allows Morgan a stretch in control, during which she takes time to disrespect and taunt the champ between attacks targeting La Primera‘s ribs.

The champ weathers through it, however, and tags in a fired-up Americano, who takes it to Dom and nails a Blockbuster after a striking sequence. Morgan tries to distract Americano, buying Dom enough time to recover and take control before sending us to another break at 8:26pm! Yep, spent nearly three minutes in an ad break, came back for nearly four minutes of wrestling, then back to an ad. We return from break at 8:30pm to find Dom still working over Americano. Americano hangs on and drops Dom with a driver, buying enough time to tag in La Primera. Vaquer and Morgan clash in the middle of the ring, with Vaquer looking for a pin before the two battle back and forth for a few moments. Vaquer hits a Dragon Screw to set up a Gooner T — aka the Devil’s Kiss; I’ll never not call it that. Morgan takes the move and rolls into a corner, seated, trying to get a breather, only for Vaquer to charge in with a Meteora.

Dirty Dom gets in the ring to distract Vaquer, setting up an attack from Morgan. Dom and Morgan pause to hug, allowing Americano to attack Dom from behind. During their scuffle, Dom tries to set up a 619, but Americano counters and sets up a 619 of his own! He looks to Rey for permission — and Rey gives it — then eats a slap from Morgan. Americano points behind her and Vaquer Superkicks Morgan! Morgan falls down across Dom’s back while he’s still stranded over the middle rope, allowing Vaquer to hit a 619 on both of them at the same time! Americano and Vaquer head up opposite corners, setting up a dual Frog Splash situation, but The Judgment Day’s Raquel Rodriguez, Roxanne Perez and JD McDonagh hit the ring, attacking both Americano and Vaquer to cause the disqualification at 8:33pm!

Your Winners, AAA Mega Champion El Grande Americano & Women’s World Champion Stephanie Vaquer! (11+ minutes)

After the Match: The Judgment Day Beatdown

Americano and Vaquer quickly fall to the numbers game. Rey Mysterio attempts to make the save but is no army of one. The Judgment Day proceed to beat down Rey, Vaquer and Americano, capping it off with Dom hitting a Frog Splash on Rey. The Judgment Day stand tall over the downed heroes, soaking up loud boos. They stomp Rey once more for good measure, then leave the ring, ending our segment!

Backstage: Penta & Dragon Lee

We cut backstage to see Penta getting ready when Dragon Lee walks up, and the two speak Spanish to each other. Look, if you want bilingual results, start a GoFundMe for Rosetta Stone. I’d love to learn Spanish. Anywho, we’ll assume they wished each other luck in their respective matches and Dragon Lee probably told Penta he’s gonna win.

Men’s Money in the Bank Triple Threat Qualifying Match: World Tag Team Champion Austin Theory vs. Je’Von Evans vs. Big Cass

Je’Von Evans is out first, and we head to another break. We then get the above backstage segment featuring Penta and Dragon Lee before returning to the ring. Austin Theory is shown entering the ring, accompanied by Maxxine Dupri; his entrance started during the break. Big Cass is out next, and we get our opening bell at 8:46pm. The seven-foot giant Big Cass looks absolutely jacked. All three Superstars take a moment to size each other up. Theory tries to talk Evans into teaming up with him to take on Cass, but instead immediately attacks Evans! Theory begins unloading on Evans until an angry Cass grabs him and throws him off. Evans hops on Cass’s back and we devolve into a few moments of all three Superstars squaring off, quickly changing dance partners. Cass is eventually sent out of the ring, allowing Evans to battle Theory directly. Evans sends Theory over the top rope, then dives out of the ring to send Cass crashing into the announce table! Evans manages to sidestep a charging Theory, sending him into the barricade, then charges around the ring looking to attack Cass. Evans leaps up, but Cass catches him by the throat and sends him flying over the barricade with a Chokeslam into the timekeeper’s area — and sends us to a break!

We return from break to find Big Cass setting up a move in the corner. Theory attacks him from behind, then shows off his own power by picking up the seven-footer on his shoulders and hitting a Rack Bomb! He’s immediately hit by a Frog Splash from The Young OG Evans! Huge pop for this spot, and impressive power from Theory, for real. Evans sees his opponents in the drop zone outside the ring and hits a beautiful Tope con Giro to wipe out Theory at ringside! Evans takes Theory back into the ring, only to eat a Side Slam from Big Cass. Cass then turns his attention to Theory, but Maxxine Dupri grabs Theory and pulls him out to safety. Cass gestures for her to go to the back.

Evans tries to catch the distracted Cass with an OG Cutter, but Cass avoids it. Chaos ensues as all three men go at it again. Cass nearly pins Theory, but Dupri once again gets involved, stopping the pin. Cass begins to dismantle Theory and Evans, even Chokeslamming Evans onto the apron — that’s the hardest side of the ring, folks! Cass begins to stalk Evans in the ring but, once again, Theory gets involved and eats the attack. Evans and Cass go at it again, with Evans using his superior agility and athleticism to set up a huge OG Cutter and pick up the pin on Big Cass at 8:55pm! He’ll join Bron Breakker with four more slots still available!

Your Winner and Advancing to Money in the Bank, Je’Von Evans! (9 minutes)

The Bloodline/946 Catch-Up

We get a video hyping the feud between The Bloodline and the newly-formed 946 — Royce Keys, formerly known as Powerhouse Hobbs, alongside OTM’s Bronco Nima & Lucien Price. The video covers the recent ambush of The Usos, their attempted response last week, and includes videographic evidence of 946 committing what I’m reasonably certain is felony arson. Keys ends it by repeating, “Ain’t nobody safe.” We then cut backstage to see The Usos angrily discussing what we just saw. Jacob Fatu comes up and tells them that Reigns said 946 is their problem and they should handle it, but asks if the right play is to set it off tonight with Roman in the building. He reminds them that Reigns has a title defense tonight. Jey Uso tells them that The Bloodline has gotta protect Reigns at all costs. Fatu angrily responds that there’s no way 946 will backdoor Roman, and warns them that 946 will try to pick them off one-by-one to leave Roman on his own. They ask Fatu what the play is; he says it’s to stick together. They agree to keep it one hundred.

Intercontinental Championship Match: Chad Gable (c) vs. Dragon Lee

The champ, Chad Gable, is out first and gets a great welcome from Mexico City. Corey Graves reminds us of Gable’s recent history, first being anti-luchador before eventually embracing the culture and doing his best to make amends. We head to break at 9:02pm; this match is next, folks! We return from break to find Dragon Lee already in the ring, soaking up a hometown-hero welcome. We get our bell at 9:07pm. This is a solid, lightweight match, with both Superstars leaning heavily into their technical playbooks. Gable and Lee alternate control, with the crowd showing plenty of love for Gable — but nothing like what they give Lee. Lee hits a huge spot around 9:11pm, launching himself through the ropes with a Suicide Dive and crashing into the champ with a Cannonball against the announce table! That sends us to another break at 9:11pm.

We return from break at 9:14pm, 74 minutes into our show — 24 minutes, thus far, are wrestling, for the numbers nerds. Both Superstars are still giving it their all, and this crowd hasn’t grown quiet for more than two seconds all night. Gable nearly picks up the win shortly after our return with a beautiful Sit-Out Powerbomb, but Lee kicks out at 2.9! The action continues and picks up pace, with Gable looking for an Ankle Lock in an effort to slow down the lucha Superstar. Lee digs deep into his repertoire, however, and hits a Double Stomp on Gable as he’s strung up in the ropes outside the ring. Lee nurses his knee after hitting the move, and both Superstars barely get back into the ring as the referee reaches ten on the count-out.

Gable fires off a quick Belly-to-Belly Suplex, then heads up top and hits a picture-perfect Moonsault for the cover, but Lee kicks out! Gable then takes us to the OG Suplex City — three consecutive German Suplexes while keeping the waist locked. A series of suplexes is a Suplex Train, folks. On the third German Suplex, Lee floats over and lands on his feet before quickly Dropkicking the champ. Lee hits Operation Dragon and nearly picks up the win! The crowd rips off a huge “This is wrestling!” chant in Spanish. Lee looks for a Styles Clash, but Gable rolls through and slaps on the Ankle Lock! Lee begins kicking at Gable’s face, but Gable holds on and adjusts his position to keep the hold locked in. Lee finally manages to roll through and escape, pops up and hits a Styles Clash! Lee covers, but Gable gets the arm up!

Folks, this is a match worth watching later if you can, as my results aren’t doing it justice. Both Superstars are down for a few moments while the crowd continues ripping off chants for both men. Gable grabs Lee’s ankle as he tries to rise and slaps on the Ankle Lock again. Lee desperately tries to roll onto his back and kick Gable off, but Gable locks his legs around Lee’s and drops to the mat, keeping him anchored in place! Lee desperately tries to reach the ropes but can’t, and finally taps at 9:22pm EST! Immediately after the bell, Gable breaks the hold and checks on Lee. Sweet spot of sportsmanship. Gable then approaches Lee as he sits recovering after the match, offers him his hand and pulls him into a hug to a huge pop. Gable’s nose may be broken.

Your Winner AND STILL Intercontinental Champion, Chad Gable! (15 minutes)

Women’s Money in the Bank Triple Threat Qualifying Match: Women’s Intercontinental Champion Raquel Rodriguez vs. NXT Women’s Champion Kelani Jordan vs. Lola Vice

NXT Women’s Champion Kelani Jordan is out first, and we head to a break! We return from break to find Women’s Intercontinental Champion Raquel Rodriguez already finishing her entrance. Out next is Lola Vice, who, alongside Jordan, is making her Raw debut. We get our bell at 9:34pm. Jordan immediately exits the ring and posts up on the ramp, telling the other two to go ahead and fight. Rodriguez and Vice lock up, starting us off! Jordan eventually joins the fray, and a commercial break comes and goes. Rodriguez and Vice battle in the ring until Vice sends Rodriguez over the top, where Jordan attacks her. Jordan sends Rodriguez into the steel steps before entering the ring and kicking it out with Vice. Vice gets the upper hand, then unloads a series of quick kicks on Rodriguez as she tries to get the drop on Vice. Vice hits a Roundhouse Kick, sending Rodriguez into a seated position in one corner — then notices Jordan seated in the opposite corner. Vice then hits a series of booty-rump attacks (Graves’ words, not mine) on both!

The action continues, with Rodriguez getting a few moments of dominance. Jordan counters a Rodriguez Powerbomb attempt into a roll-up for a close pin attempt. Jordan heads up top and hits a Frog Splash on Rodriguez. She and Vice exchange Roundhouse Kicks, with Vice’s connecting and dropping the NXT Women’s Champion. Vice covers, but Rodriguez makes the save to keep the match alive. Rodriguez hits a Fallaway Slam on Vice, then attempts to Spear Jordan in the corner. Jordan moves and Rodriguez Spears the ring post! Jordan heads up top for a 450 Splash, but Vice catches her in a submission just as she makes contact! Rodriguez makes the save by diving off the top, then looks for a Tejana Bomb on Vice. Vice wiggles free and converts it into a chokehold! Rodriguez whips Vice off her back as commentary hypes Vice’s pro-MMA background. Jordan distracts Rodriguez; Vice attacks Jordan, sending her out of the ring, then quickly rolls up Rodriguez to pick up the win at 9:44pm EST! She’ll join Sol Ruca and four other to-be-determined Superstars at Money in the Bank in three weeks.

Your Winner and Advancing to Money in the Bank, Lola Vice! (10 minutes)

Video Segment: 946

We see 946 via a cellphone-recorded video. They address The Bloodline’s earlier comments and put them on notice. We head to break!

World Heavyweight Championship Main Event Match: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Penta

Penta begins his entrance at 9:51pm, wearing special ring gear. I don’t want to comment on what I think it looks like, as I don’t want to use incorrect terms. Just watch it on YouTube later — it’s cool AF. Penta makes his way down the ramp following a huge pyro spectacular. The crowd is going to be absolutely on fire for this one tonight, folks. He gets into the ring and we get even more pyro from the ring posts. A truly grand entrance for the challenger tonight, with a raucous and vocal crowd tearing the roof off with chants for their fellow countryman. Penta gets a Roman-esque entrance and reception that goes on for several minutes. Finally, at 9:57pm, we get the entrance of our Tribal Chief, World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns. Reigns makes his way down to the ring by himself, mean-mugging the crowd as they boo him with every step. We get our official introductions, with Penta still wearing his, presumably, Aztec-themed headdress and chest/pauldron gear. We head to break at 10:03pm — this match starts next! We return from break to find both Superstars readying up. They face off in the middle of the ring, and the referee calls for the bell at 10:06pm. Penta and Reigns silently stare each other down for a few moments before nodding and backing off. They circle the ring as commentary constantly hypes just how big this match is for the home-country man, Penta. The first several moments are actionless, as both Superstars circle, stare each other down and soak up chants from the crowd. At one point, Reigns shushes the crowd, drawing loud boos. Finally, both Superstars lock up and we are under way!
The opening minutes are spent with a hot crowd and a slower pace. Reigns and Penta alternate shorter stretches in control, with their strikes deliberately timed to allow the viewer to savor every moment. The crowd stays strongly behind Penta, of course, and constantly harasses Reigns with boos every time he gets some offense in. Reigns slows the pace even further, using strong body shots to keep Penta in check before spending half a minute taunting the crowd. Penta finally fires up, sending the champ outside before hitting a beautiful Tope con Giro to send us to a break at 10:10pm!

The action continues with Penta stringing together strikes and beginning to build momentum. The fight spills outside, where both men trade some big suplexes and brutal spots. After Reigns misses a Superman Punch, Penta zeroes in on the champion’s right arm, and the damage becomes increasingly apparent as the match wears on. Reigns eventually posts up for a Spear, but when he pounds the mat — as he usually does — pain shoots through his right wrist and forces him to hesitate. Penta takes advantage and pours on the pressure, but Reigns survives the rally and eventually catches the challenger with a Superman Punch for a close two-count.

Penta answers by planting Reigns with a Mexican Destroyer for another near fall, leaving the champion looking absolutely shocked. Mexico City is on its feet and roaring through nearly every exchange. Gotta love this crowd, and let’s hope WWE doesn’t take another 15 years to come back. Reigns eventually regains control and begins disrespectfully hammering the challenger with slow, powerful rights while jawing with the fans. His attention increasingly shifts toward the audience until he grabs a mic and speaks in Spanish, demanding that Mexico City acknowledge him to a deafening chorus of boos! Reigns then builds momentum by rebounding off the ropes for a Spear — only for Penta to cut him off with a Superkick! Penta follows with a Springboard Mexican Destroyer and hooks the leg, but Reigns survives again!

Both men stay down for a few moments as The OTC tries to work some life back into his injured right wrist and arm. They rise to their knees and begin trading deliberate shots, gradually fighting their way back to a vertical base as the pace and intensity increase with every blow. Reigns lands four straight rights; Penta responds with four kicks, a chop and a Cero Miedo strike! Reigns rocks him with another shot and charges forward, only to eat a Superkick. He immediately comes back for more and gets blasted with a second Superkick — then a third! Penta attempts to capitalize with a springboard attack, but Reigns snatches him out of mid-air with a Superman Punch! The champion wastes no time, exploding through Penta with a Spear to secure the clean victory at 10:28pm EST!

Your Winner AND STILL World Heavyweight Champion, Roman Reigns! (22 minutes)

In Closing

That seems to be it for tonight, folks! See you all tomorrow night for NXT!
