Welcome to WWE NXT!
Welcome, welcome, welcome! It’s Tuesday so it’s time for NXT! WWE NXT goes LIVE tonight at 8pm EST from the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, airing on The CW Network. We’re just two nights removed from NXT Heatwave, folks, and tonight’s fallout show features four announced matches as Shiloh Hill looks for payback against Naraku, Mason Rook renews his rivalry with Kam Hendrix, Thea Hail faces EVOLVE Women’s Champion Nikkita Lyons in non-title action, and Noam Dar & Romeo Moreno battle Sean Legacy & Dorian Van Dux with both teams looking to move toward an NXT Tag Team Championship opportunity. What a digital mouthful! We’ll have all that and more tonight, starting shortly!
Video: NXT Heatwave Recap
We open with a look back at this past Sunday’s NXT Heatwave, a night that dramatically reshaped the brand’s championship picture. Zaria defeated Wren Sinclair and Kali Armstrong to unify the NXT Women’s North American and WWE Women’s Speed Championships, while The Vanity Project’s Brad Baylor & Ricky Smokes defeated Myles Borne & Tavion Heights to regain the NXT Tag Team Championship. Jaida Parker forced Nattie to submit to the Sharpshooter, and Kelani Jordan defeated Kendal Grey to capture the NXT Women’s Championship. Jackson Drake knocked off Myles Borne to win the NXT North American Championship, with a frustrated Borne turning on Tavion Heights afterward. And in the main event, Grayson Waller picked his moment perfectly, returning after seemingly injuring his knee and ultimately pinning Tony D’Angelo in the Fatal 4-Way to leave Heatwave as the new NXT Champion.
In the Ring: Zilla Fatu
We cut to the ring for the entrance of Zilla Fatu, who made his NXT in-ring debut this past weekend at Heatwave. Apparently, Fatu goes by the moniker “The Main One.” Okay then. Fatu gets on the mic and opens with his traditional, nasally “Hello!” before telling the NXT Universe that he thought he had everything figured out, but Heatwave didn’t go the way he expected. The stars were aligned, the red carpet was rolled out, but he failed to get the job done. “But the crazy thing is…to be sharing the WWE ring, fighting for a championship, it felt amazing!” Fatu says it’s not a matter of if, but when.
Out comes Tristan Angels! “Mr. Fatu, must we listen to you prattle on about Heatwave any further? Oy!” Angels says the NXT Universe has the attention span of fruit flies and they’re probably already bored of Fatu, so he’ll simplify things for everyone: Zilla lost. Angels says Fatu proved that he’s not ready to be “The Main One” in NXT — and, in fact, isn’t even the Main One in his own family. “It seems the further down the Bloodline we go, the less talent we find!” Angels questions why Fatu ever thought he could win the NXT Championship in his debut, then continues running him down over his looks, the way he’s lived his life, and whether he’s worthy of being champion. Tristan, naturally, believes he is.
Fatu tells Angels that he likes his accent, but doesn’t like his attitude. Zilla says his family in Texas got to watch him compete at Heatwave, so “how about my family here in Orlando see me beat that ass?” Angels says he obliges, and the two immediately come to blows. Fatu gets the better of the exchange and sends Angels scrambling from the ring and backing his way up the ramp as commentary wonders whether this impromptu fight is about to become official. We head to break!
In His Car: Myles Borne
We get a pre-recorded video promo from Myles Borne, sitting in his car and reflecting on what happened at Heatwave — specifically, what he did to Tavion Heights. Borne admits he’s been thinking a lot about his actions and says that while part of him may feel bad, he knew losing the NXT Tag Team Championship would eventually lead to Tavion “suplexing me into the fifth row.” Myles puts it simply: he’s deaf, not blind. So he struck first. Borne says he was naive enough to believe that in this business, he could make money and make friends. Judging by the tone of this promo, it sounds like Myles has decided which one matters more.
Singles Match: Shiloh Hill vs. Naraku
Shiloh Hill is out first around 8:18pm, followed by Naraku. We get our opening bell at 8:20pm. Commentary questions whether Shiloh Hill is truly ready to take on the artist formerly known as EVIL, with Booker T warning that Hill may be in for the toughest match of his career to date. Naraku and Hill settle into a methodical, hard-hitting contest, with neither man pulling out anything particularly flashy but both getting opportunities to showcase their usual offense. Hill hangs tough against the much more experienced Naraku, while Naraku slows things down and controls stretches of the match with the physical style that has defined much of his career. Late in the match, Naraku turns his back to the referee and sprays his trademark mist into his own hand. With the official distracted moments later, Naraku wipes the mist across Hill’s eyes, temporarily blinding and stunning him. That gives Naraku all the opening he needs, dropping Hill with Enter the Abyss for the three-count at 8:30pm.
Your Winner, Naraku! (10 minutes)
Tag Team Match: Noam Dar & Romeo Moreno vs. Sean Legacy & Dorian Van Dux
We get our entrances ahead of the opening bell at 8:40pm. Dorian Van Dux starts things off with Romeo Moreno and takes early control for his team before both men tag out. The match settles into a solid back-and-forth affair, with neither team able to maintain control for long. Van Dux stands out with a particularly physical approach, nearly decapitating Noam Dar with a brutal clothesline early on. Dar tries to rally his team and pick up the pace, but Van Dux shuts that shit down with yet another vicious lariat.
Legacy follows his partner’s lead, keeping the pressure on and preventing Dar & Moreno from finding any sustained momentum. The action eventually spills to the floor, where Van Dux & Legacy take control and wipe out both of their opponents at ringside. With Dar and Moreno laid out on the outside and their opponents firmly in command, we head to a commercial break! Dorian Van Dux continues to dominate through the break and after we return, with Dar & Romeo Moreno putting in a solid performance but Van Dux clearly emerging as the star of the match. One particularly fun spot sees Dar take flight from the top rope, giving Van Dux a chance to audition for the Secret Service as he valiantly shoves Sean Legacy out of harm’s way and eats the diving attack himself.
The pace begins to pick up considerably as the action spills in and out of the ring, with all four Superstars getting opportunities to show off their aerial ability. Legacy eventually appears to tweak his knee coming off the top rope, and Dar immediately capitalizes on the opening, catching Legacy with a super-duper pinfall to steal the victory at 8:49pm!
Your Winners, Noam Dar & Romeo Moreno! (9 minutes)
After the Match: The Creed Brothers Are Back!
Well, that’s pretty self-explanatory! Julius & Brutus Creed suddenly hit the scene and proceed to lay waste to the competition, making an emphatic return and putting the entire NXT Tag Team division on notice!
Backstage: Zaria’s Title Decision & BirthRight
We cut backstage where NXT GM Robert Stone is standing by with Zaria and BirthRight. Following Zaria’s victory in Sunday’s Title Unification Match, Stone explains that she must choose which championship will continue forward while the other is officially retired.
Zaria makes her decision: she’s keeping the NXT Women’s North American Championship. With that, the WWE Women’s Speed Championship is officially retired. Stone adds that the decision also means the men’s WWE Speed Championship, currently held by Lexis King, is being retired as well.
King is understandably less than thrilled by the development, but turns his attention toward the bigger picture. He says it’s time for BirthRight to remind everyone exactly who they are — and start taking the power back.
In the Ring: New NXT Women’s Champion Kelani Jordan
We see new NXT Women’s Champion Kelani Jordan beginning to make her way toward the ring as we head to a commercial break. Kelani Jordan makes her way out to the ring, introducing herself as “One-Shot Lani.” The new NXT Women’s Champion cuts an egotistical — albeit somewhat deserved — promo about her victory at Heatwave. When the crowd breaks into a “You deserve it!” chant, Jordan quickly shuts that down. She doesn’t deserve anything — she earned it. Jordan boasts that she put former champion Kendal Grey in the hospital Sunday, but says that’s okay because Grey’s partner, Wren Sinclair, can baby her while she’s there. Jordan proceeds to put the rest of the women’s division on notice, declaring that nobody will ever overlook her again because nobody does it like Lani.
Out comes Jaida Parker! Jordan looks considerably less thrilled about this development. Parker gets on the mic and, surprisingly, starts with some praise. “Hell yeah, Lani, The Standout is feeling herself, and you deserve it. You earned that Women’s Title!” Nice words from Parker! Parker points out that she had a pretty successful Heatwave herself, finally overcoming the biggest thorn in her side by, in her words, tapping out “Nattie’s little ass.” Parker runs down everything she’s accomplished over the last four months and says she’s proven that she’s championship material. That means her sights are now firmly set on Jordan’s title — and Parker reminds the champ that she’s already beaten her before. Parker doesn’t feel like waiting and challenges Jordan to put the title on the line tonight! The champ isn’t surprised to see Parker out here running her mouth again, saying that’s all Jaida ever seems to do. Jordan concedes that Parker has elevated her game, but says she’s still three levels below Lani.
Jordan gets the crowd fired up, pointing out that they’re both here and they’re both dressed to compete. Sounds like we’ve got ourselves a title match! “Just not tonight!” Jordan makes it clear that Parker doesn’t get to dictate when she defends her championship. Instead, the champ tells Jaida she’ll see her next week!
Singles Non-Title Match: EVOLVE Women’s Champion Nikkita Lyons vs. Thea Hail
After we return from the break, Nikkita Lyons finishes her entrance and we get our opening bell at 9:09pm. Both Superstars come out working at a fast, aggressive pace, with Hail initially getting the better of the exchanges. Lyons quickly begins leaning into her usual combination of martial-arts-based striking and power offense, firing off heavy kicks before using her size advantage to sling Hail around with a series of throws and suplexes. Hail comes out of the gate strong, but eventually gives way to Lyons’ relentless offense. Lyons then changes tactics and slows things down, grinding away at Hail with holds focused around the neck and upper body. Hail eventually powers her way back to her feet with Lyons practically hanging off her back, breaking a rear neck wrench by throwing herself backward and crushing Lyons beneath her. A charging Lyons eats a headbutt, giving Hail the opening she needs to start building momentum. Short Stack Hail shows off some impressive strength with a beautiful suplex on the considerably larger Lyons, then connects with a Blockbuster as the pace begins building toward the finish. Lyons manages to find a second wind, but wastes precious seconds jawing at Hail instead of staying on the attack. That hesitation comes back to bite her. Hail survives Lyons’ late rally, catches her in the ensuing exchange and picks up the victory after a Hail Mary off the top at 9:15pm!
Your Winner, Thea Hail! (6 minutes)
Singles Match: Mason Rook vs. Kam Hendrix
Mason Rook is out first to a great reaction from the NXT Universe. We head to a commercial break ahead of Kam Hendrix’s entrance! We get our opening bell at 9:20pm, and both Superstars immediately look ready to squash some beef. It’s a physical affair from the outset, with Kam Hendrix taking control early and slowing the pace, grounding Mason Rook while using stiff kicks and heavy strikes to keep the big man down. Rook weathers the storm and eventually begins showing signs of life, using his size and power to turn things around with a series of big suplexes. One of the highlights sees Rook plant Hendrix with a beautiful Blue Thunder Bomb for a two-count, but Hendrix isn’t going out like that and fires back with a huge shoulder thrust to stop Mason’s momentum. Hendrix then removes a turnbuckle pad — the same tactic that helped him defeat Rook in their previous encounter — but this time the referee catches him in the act and issues a warning. Hendrix looks ready to disregard the official anyway, and that momentary distraction gives Rook the opening he needs to capitalize and pick up the victory at 9:26pm! We head to another commercial break.
Your Winner, Mason Rook! (6 minutes)
Backstage Interview: Sarah Schreiber with Tavion Heights
Sarah Schreiber is backstage with Tavion Heights and references Myles Borne’s earlier video from his car. Tavion admits he’s still pissed about losing the NXT Tag Team Championship, but says what hurts even more is what happened afterward. Myles was his day-one best friend, his brother, and the fact that Borne genuinely believed Tavion was going to stab him in the back is what cuts deepest. Up comes The Vanity Project to pour some salt in the wound, claiming Borne was never really Tavion’s friend in the first place. Heights quickly turns his attention toward Jackson Drake, reminding the NXT North American Champion that he’s already beaten him once — and says he can take that title from Drake right now. Drake says there’s nothing he’d love more than picking up an easy “dub” over an Olympic champion and then listening to Tavion cry about it afterward. With that, Drake heads off to speak with the GM about making the match happen.
Singles Match: Tristan Angels vs. Zilla Fatu
We cut back to the ring, where Tristan Angels is already waiting. Zilla Fatu makes his entrance to a strong reaction from the NXT Universe. This’ll be his NXT (weekly show) in-ring debut. We get our opening bell at 9:34pm! Angels takes control very briefly out of the gate, using slow, deliberate chops and strikes to taunt Fatu. That doesn’t last long. Within the opening minute, Zilla fires up and starts taking the fight directly to Angels, bringing the NXT Universe along with him. Fatu sends Angels spilling to the outside and follows with a suicide dive that catches enough of him to send us to a commercial break. When we return, Angels and Fatu are battling it out, with Angels doing enough to keep himself alive against the larger opponent. Angels eventually slams Fatu face-first into the turnbuckle, opening him up and drawing blood — which only seems to piss Zilla off. The two continue trading control over the next several minutes, with Angels refusing to simply go away despite Fatu’s increasingly aggressive offense. In the end, however, Fatu proves to be too much. Zilla catches Angels with the Triple Z — his running, Superman-style Samoan Spike — and puts him away at 9:43pm to pick up his first victory in NXT!
Your Winner, Zilla Fatu! (9 minutes)
After the Match: BirthRight Confronts Zilla Fatu
BirthRight make their way out and try to recruit Zilla Fatu, promising him everything he could possibly want. They tell Fatu that with this family behind him, he can truly become “The Main One.” BirthRight warn Zilla that he’s already got a target on his back and that the NXT locker room is full of snakes just waiting for the chance to take a bite out of him. Lexis King steps forward and extends an official invitation to join BirthRight. Fatu takes the mic. “Hell-o!” He pauses and smiles. “More like, hell-no!” Fatu cracks a smile as BirthRight immediately try to jump him, but Zilla slips out of the ring before they can get their hands on him. From the floor, Fatu tells them they’ll have to think a little smarter next time.
Main Event Segment: New NXT Champion Grayson Waller
Waller is shown outside the arena and we head to break! We return to the ring, where NXT General Manager Robert Stone awaits. Stone introduces the new NXT Champion, and out comes the arrogant Aussie himself, Grayson Waller! Waller takes his time soaking up the boos before getting on the mic and asking if everyone was expecting somebody else. He then turns his attention toward commentary, doing his best whiny Vic Joseph impression before telling Vic that he should be thankful he gets to come out every week and talk about Grayson Waller. “You’re welcome.” Waller gets serious for a moment and says he doesn’t think people truly understand what winning the NXT Championship means to him. He’s main-evented Raw and SmackDown, competed all over the world and even won a championship at WrestleMania, but says winning this title at Heatwave means more to him than all of it. Waller says it would be remiss of him not to thank the people responsible for getting him here — and then proceeds to thank himself. Only himself.
The champ says he took the risk of coming back to NXT, he worked his mind and body into shape, and he won this championship. Waller brags about taking down Zilla Fatu and mocks his trademark “Hell-o!” with a “Good-bye!” He declares that the world can no longer ignore Grayson Waller and claims his phone has been ringing off the hook, with both Nick Aldis and Adam Pearce blowing him up. Don’t worry, gentlemen — Waller says he’ll get back to them when he’s ready. Waller admits, however, that winning the title doesn’t mean anything unless he does something with it. So who’s going to be next to try knocking him off his pedestal? Zilla Fatu? Waller says Fatu’s DNA may have earned him some early opportunities, but sometimes talent isn’t passed through the genes. Cruz Montana? Waller claims he caught Cruz crying backstage after Heatwave before conceding that Montana is pretty good — he’s just TNA good. Ohhhh! And as for Tony D’Angelo? Waller says if anyone wants to find The Don, they’ll need two shovels to dig down far enough to where he’s buried him.
Out comes Saquon Shugars! Shugars tells Waller, “It don’t get no sweeter than this,” before saying the champion has found the answer to his question. Waller came back talking about rattling cages, but Shugars says he’s looking at the man who rattled one apart just last week. Shugars makes it clear that he wants a piece of the champion. Before that can go any further, Cruz Montana emerges through the crowd and asks the NXT Universe, “What’s good?” Cruz tells Waller that Zilla might not be ready, but he sure as hell is. Montana reminds the champion that Waller didn’t beat him three weeks ago and sure as hell didn’t beat him at Heatwave. Enter EK Prosper! Prosper points out that Cruz has already had his opportunity, while Prosper has been turning heads week after week. He’s been swinging for the fences, so why stop now? Apparently everybody wants in, because Mason Rook is next! Rook says Waller has managed to piss off just about every guy in the locker room, himself included. Waller immediately cracks that they need to switch to the widescreen camera now that Mason’s here.
And then Tony D’Angelo arrives! The former champion demands his rematch, pointing out that Waller never beat him one-on-one for the NXT Championship. GM Robert Stone finally steps in and tells everybody they’re not doing this tonight. Keanu Carver joins the party and has a suggestion: if everybody wants to fight so badly, Stone should put them all in a six-man match. Stone likes the idea and announces a Six-Man Tag Team Match for next week’s NXT main event! That’s apparently the last bit of diplomacy we’re getting tonight, because all hell immediately breaks loose! The challengers start throwing hands as the ring descends into complete chaos. Everyone gets involved — everyone, that is, except Grayson Waller. The arrogant Aussie wisely slips out of the ring with his championship and watches the carnage unfold from a safe distance as NXT goes off the air!
Next Week on NXT
- NXT North American Championship: Jackson Drake (c) vs. Tavion Heights
- Kelani Jordan and Jaida Parker meet again
