WWE FRIDAY NIGHT SMACKDOWN RESULTS (12/16/2022)
Sami Zayn & The Usos Arrive
This week’s show kicks off with a live shot in the parking lot where we see a car pull up. Out pops Sami Zayn and The Usos. They shake hands and then we see them head inside the building as Michael Cole hypes tonight’s return of Roman Reigns.
WWE Women’s Tag-Team Championships
Liv Morgan & Tegan Nox vs. Iyo Sky & Dakota Kai (C)
From there, the regular SmackDown theme and opening video and then we shoot inside AllState Arena in Chicago, Ill. where Michael Cole welcomes us to the show. We see he and Wade Barrett at ringside as Liv Morgan makes her way out.
Morgan is joined by Tegan Nox, who will be her tag-team partner for this opening tag-team title contest. The two make their way to the ring together and settle inside.
Now the theme hits for their opponents, the reigning, defending WWE Women’s Tag-Team Champions Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky. The two make their way out accompanied by Bayley for this opening title tilt.
The bell sounds and we’re off-and-running with this one. We see Nox and Sky kick things off for their respective teams. Sky and Kai make frequent tags to keep a fresh person on Nox at all times.
Finally, Nox makes the tag and in comes Morgan. She and Nox hit a double-team spot for a Morgan follow-up pin attempt, but they only get two, as Sky kicks out.
We see Morgan grab a kendo stick and hit the ring ready to use it. Nox calms her down but gets hit from behind as her attention was momentarily off of her opponents.
Morgan distracts Damage CTRL on the floor and Nox hits a high cross body splash from the top-rope to the floor. On that note, we head to a mid-match commercial break as the action continues.
As we settle back in from the break, we see Nox still being dominated by the Damage CTRL duo and being kept from making a much-needed tag to Morgan. We see and hear Bayley cheering on her buddies from ringside.
Morgan finally gets the hot tag and she goes on an impressive offensive spree, taking out Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky until finally Kai catches Morgan off-guard with a big shot that kills her momentum.
Tegan Nox tags in and hits the shiniest wizard for a super close near fall that the Damage CTRL duo manages to break up. We see a sunset power bomb and a flying drop kick on the floor in back-to-back high spots that pops the Chicago crowd.
Back in the ring, Sky hits an uppercut that slows down the challengers. Bayley gets involved, as does a person dressed all in black who kicked Tegan Nox’s head off. Iyo Sky hits a moonsault to follow up and gets the cover for the three count to retain the titles.
Winners and STILL WWE Women’s Tag-Team Champions: Dakota Kai & Iyo Sky
Gunther Addresses Ricochet
We see a video package profiling WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther of Imperium, which includes footage of Ricochet winning the SmackDown World Cup while Gunther addresses him with comments made directly into the camera.
After the video, we return live and Cole and Barrett talk about the Gunther-Ricochet showdown scheduled for later tonight. We then head to a commercial break.
Ricochet Addresses Gunther
As we settle back in from the break, we see Ricochet in a video package talking into the camera as footage of his SmackDown World Cup tournament victory is shown. From there, we see footage of Gunther mixed in for more promotion to their I-C title match later tonight.
Solo Sikoa’s Savage Attacks Shown
The Progressive Match Flo segment shows Solo Sikoa’s savage attack of Matt Riddle on last week’s show after Kevin Owens ran off the rest of The Bloodline with a steel chair. We then see Solo Sikoa’s dominance over Elias on this week’s WWE Raw. We also see Kevin Owens’ interaction with them on Raw.
The Usos Talk About Roman Reigns’ Intentions Tonight With Sami Zayn
Now we return live and we see Sami Zayn cleaned up with nice clothes and his hair pinned up. He asks rest of The Bloodline how he looks. He asks where Solo Sikoa is. The Usos tell him he’s with “The Tribal Chief” and says they’ll be here soon. He says he’s nervous and heads off to get a drink.
The Usos say tonight Roman Reigns is gonna make Sami Zayn a full-blown Uce. Jey and Jimmy debate on what Reigns will do tonight and how Sami might be set up for a big disappointment.
QR Code With Disturbing Footage
We see a QR Code with disturbing additional footage from last week’s scene where LA Knight ran into Uncle Howdy backstage. Michael Cole and Wade Barrett show the footage, which sees Knight tied up with a mask on being tortured by Bray Wyatt.
After that airs, we see LA Knight live backstage making his way towards the ring as we head to another commercial break.
LA Knight Addresses Bray Wyatt
When we return from the break, we see LA Knight in the middle of making his entrance to the ring. He gets on the microphone and says he wants to talk to us. He tells the fans to shut up and says he wants to say this — he’s been blindsided and cheapshotted by Bray Wyatt over and over again. He says despite that, he’s still knocking on his front door.
Knight says he’s a former champion and his latest return is one of the most talked about ever. He says since then he’s done nothing more than dress up like a goof and blame his attacks on Boy Howdy and others.
He tells Wyatt to put on whichever mask or costume he needs to so that he can come down to the ring right now and get stomped out. The lights in the building then go out.
When the lights come back on, it is Bray Wyatt who walks out with a microphone in hand. The fans pop huge. Wyatt says he has missed Chicago but he’s sick of Knight. He says Knight is barking up the wrong tree. He says he hasn’t touched him and the ironic part is they both know how this story ends.
Wyatt says since they both know how it ends he’s gonna give Knight one more chance to deliver his message and when he does, he better make it good. Knight then attacks him.
As Knight attacks Wyatt, the lights in the arena flicker and a video plays on the big screen with Wyatt in character saying, “What have you done?! You wanna see something really scary?”
We then see Wyatt live in the ring laughing as Knight continues to kick him. Smoke billows out of the entrance and Knight looks around in confusion as out comes a demonic looking figure laughing with a giant hat on as Wyatt looks over at him from the ring. Knight exits the ring and slowly backs off. We head to another commercial break after this.
Roman Reigns Has Arrived
We return from the break to a commercial for tomorrow’s WWE Tribute to the Troops special event. From there, we head back inside AllState Arena in Chicago, Ill. where we see a shot of Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa and Paul Heyman arriving backstage.
WWE Intercontinental Championship
Ricochet vs. Gunther (C)
We return inside the arena and Ricochet’s theme hits. “The Highlight of the Night” makes his way out as Michael Cole sings his praises for his recent victory in the SmackDown World Cup.
Ricochet settles inside the ring where he prepares for his one-on-one showdown with Imperium’s Gunther for the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
The champion’s theme hits and out he comes accompanied by his fellow Imperium members. He settles in the ring and his music fades down.
We see Adam Pearce eject Imperium from ringside before the match begins. Now we see Gunther and Ricochet staring each other down as this title match is about to get underway. The bell sounds and we get the formal ring introductions.
The bell sounds again and this championship contest is now officially underway here on WWE Friday Night SmackDown. Gunther takes Ricochet down early and goes to work on isolating the arm of the challenger.
Gunther goes for a big chop but Ricochet avoids it and starts chopping away at the champion with low kicks. Ricochet is nearly thrown out to the floor, however he hangs on and ends up back in the ring. He catches Gunther with an enzugiri.
He goes to work on Gunther with a drop kick in the corner. Gunther ends up blasting him with a big boot that sends him out to the floor. Gunther suplexes Ricochet on the hard part of the ring apron right as we head to a mid-match commercial break.
As we return from the break, we see the match still in progress, with Gunther dominating the offense. The commentators remind us that Imperium was ejected from ringside by Adam Pearce at the start of this contest.
We see Ricochet fight back into competitive form, but then Gunther power bombs him on his own knee for a near fall that shifts the momentum back into the favor of the champion.
Ricochet tries fighting back but again we see Gunther blast him with a big chop and then lock him up in a rear naked choke on the mat. He squeezes away at the challenger as Ricochet slowly fades. The fans rally behind him and he starts to show signs of life.
We head to another mid-match commercial break as the action continues. When we return, we see Gunther still dominating the offense, however Ricochet is firing up and making a comeback. He hits his shooting star press off the top and goes for the cover, but Gunther still kicks out before the count of three.
Gunther power bombs the hell out of Ricochet as a follow-up to another big spot. He goes for the cover folding Ricochet in half and somehow he still kicks out. Moments later, however, Gunther does manage to finish Ricochet off to retain.
Winner and STILL WWE Intercontinental Champion: Gunther
Braun Strowman Saves Ricochet From Imperium
Once the match wraps up, we see Imperium join Gunther for the post-match celebration. They hold Ricochet up and Gunther goes to attack until Braun Strowman’s theme hits and he comes out to run them off.
Roman Reigns Talks Bloodline Business
We shoot backstage and Uso is talking with Reigns as Sikoa and Heyman chill in the background. Uso says he’s down to make Sami Zayn tonight or he’s down to go the other way if he wants to do that. He walks off and Reigns tells Heyman to call Adam Pearce. As he does, we head to another commercial break.
When we return from the break, we see Pearce arrive in the locker room with Reigns, Sikoa and Heyman. Reigns tells Heyman to speak on his behalf. Heyman tells Pearce he has decided to get him out of his trouble with Bobby Lashley and Monday Night Raw.
He says imagine Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens and any partner of his choice — even if it’s Pearce himself. Pearce says he’s down and asks when. He says tonight or the Royal Rumble. Heyman tells Reigns if he does it on live network TV on FOX — December 30th, Tampa, FL.
Reigns says that sounds a whole lot better than Chicago. Heyman tells Pearce congratulations he just scored the biggest tag-team match of 2022 live on FOX. Pearce says thank you and says he’ll let Kevin Owens know.
WWE Tribute To The Troops History
Now we shoot to an extensive video package narrated by John Cena looking at the 20-year history of the WWE’s annual Tribute to the Troops tradition. They plug the 20th anniversary special tomorrow afternoon and then we return live.
Hit Row vs. Legado del Fantasma vs. The Viking Raiders
We head back inside the arena and we see the entrance of Legado Del Fantasma. A big bout is up next. On that note we head to another commercial break.
When we return from the break, Hit Row makes their way out and settles inside the ring. Finally, the horn sounds and The Viking Raiders make their way out to a big pop.
All three teams are in the ring and this match now gets officially off-and-running. The winning team of this match will advance to challenge The Usos in the next tag-team title showdown.
Ashante and Ivar start things off for their respective teams. Erik attacks from behind after Ivar is knocked out to the floor. Top Dolla gets involved and runs right into Erik who levels him. Legado Del Fantasma then hit a double top-rope drop kick. We see a big splash onto the floor taking out all the guys as we head to a mid-match commercial break.
When we return from the commercial, we see the action still in progress with The Viking Raiders dominating the action. Top Dolla starts to fight his way back into competitive form.
Hit Row start to take over and then Legado Del Fantasma both hit the ring and start taking out everyone with double-team offense. Top Dolla goes for a running dive but gets hung up in the ropes — badly. We see Zelina Vega get involved, as does others — with the commentators pointing out the no DQ ruling that this match has been given.
We see a big spot on the floor with Zelina and then the camera focuses on the legal two men in the ring. Joaquim Wilde and Top Dolla duke it out. Ashante gets the cover after a big spot from Hit Row. 1-2-3. We have our winners and new number one contenders.
Winners and NEW No. 1 Contenders For WWE Tag-Team Titles: Hit Row
Ronda Rousey, Shayna Baszler Attack Raquel Rodriguez
We see Raquel Rodriguez backstage nursing her injury and they ask her about Ronda Rousey’s title challenger being determined next week. She talks about the injury she suffered at Rousey and Shayna Baslzer’s hands. She says she will be in the gauntlet match next week.
As she continues to talk, in comes Shayna Baszler and Ronda Rousey to attack her and hurt her already injured arm. They tell her to ice her arm, 20 minutes should do it and then walk off. We head to another commercial break after that.
Roman Reigns & The Bloodline
We return from the break and we hear the theme of Roman Reigns. Out comes “The Tribal Chief” along with the rest of The Bloodline – The Usos and Solo Sikoa, as well as Paul Heyman. They are introduced and they settle inside the ring. Sami Zayn is also out with them.
The music slowly begins to fade down. Pyro explodes and the music finally does die down. The main event segment now officially gets underway.
We hear Reigns address The Bloodline for the first time since WarGames. He says tonight was gonna be a good night for Sami Zayn but now it’s not. He then proceeds to bring up Kevin Owens constantly being a thorn in their side.
Reigns says we’ll find out next week when he and Sami Zayn destroy Kevin Owens and a partner of his choosing. Then as they continue to talk, we hear the familiar sounds of the voice of John Cena. Cena appears on the big screen and he talks about Owens needing a partner.
He talks about a text exchange the two had and he reveals he’ll be Owens’ partner on 12/30 for SmackDown in Tampa. The Cena theme song plays and Cole goes nuts on commentary. That’s how this week’s show goes off the air. Thanks for joining us!
