WWE SMACKDOWN RESULTS (1/17): Greensboro, N.C.

Opening Promo

A burst of flame and pyro goes off in the Greensboro, N.C. arena as the music blares in the arena and Kane makes his way down the ramp and enters the ring to begin tonight’s Friday night SmackDown! Kane picks up the mic and declares we are nine days away from his favorite event of the year, Royal Rumble. “Where 30 lost souls will put their mind, body, and spirit on the line for an opportunity for a chance to compete at Wrestlemania. A match, where you go through hell, but the reward, is a chance at immortality.” The record holder for the most wins, continues on to describe the feeling of throwing competitors over the ropes and what fun he had…

Kane is interrupted by Firefly Fun House on the Jumbotron Bray Wyatt with his Mr. Rogers-like sweater and innocent smile begins, “It’s not nice to brag and find fun in other people’s misery. Shame on you, ya big red bully!” Wyatt continues by letting it be known that Rambling Rabbit is alive and recovering nicely, as Rambling Rabit is shown with an IV and then shows his own championship belt before pointing out a picture of Kane on his wall behind him, meaning he and The Fiend “got it on” his face changes to anger as clips are shown from past fights saying “I’ll never forget you Kane, and neither will he.” as the screen shuts off and the arena fades to black.

Kane is standing on the outside of the ring while a loud screeching is heard, The Fiend crawling out of the ring and crawling towards an un-suspecting Kane. Kane turns around and is face to face with The Fiend as Kane says, “What took you so long?” Daniel Bryan with a Running Knee ambushes The Fiend as he tries to escape back through the hole in the center of the ring.

Daniel Bryan finally pulls his hand out of the hole with dreadlocks in his hand as the crowd begins to chant “Yes! Yes! Yes!” and Kane looks on, in agreement pointing his fingers to the sky and replying, “Yes! Yes! Yes” alongside Daniel Bryan.

Announcements

Tables Match is announced for later tonight.

Big E vs John Morrison announced as we go to commercial.

Backstage

Daniel Bryan is asked backstage if he feels he has The Fiend on the run. Bryan replies, “You know what he’s best at? He’s best at running away, he’s best at disappearing. How do you beat someone that’s best at running away?” Bryan challenge The Fiend to a “Strap Match” where a rope tied around one hand of Bryan and one hand of The Fiend and they cannot be seperated until the match is over. Daniel Bryan declares he will win the Universal Championship.

New Day vs. John Morrison w/ The Miz

New Day makes their way to the ring as their music sounds in the arena and they enter the ring together awaiting their opponents for this match up. John Morrison accompanied by The Miz are announced next as Morrison’s music blares through the speakers of the arena and they enter the ring. Morrison climbing to the second turnbuckle and raising his hand in the air as the fans cheer. (A Progressive clip is shown from last week’s SmackDown when Morrison helped The Miz win his match.) The bell rings and the match begins.

Morrison powers out of the cover by Big E. Morrison with a kick to the temple of Big E, launching himself off the top rope. Big E counters, flipping Morrison with a body slam. Big E with Big Splash and then a chant of “You Cannot” by the crowd as Big E claps along before continuing. Back Breaker on Big E by Morrison. Kofi Kingston grabs The Miz off the apron as he attempts to interrupt the match. Morrison makes his way to the top turnbuckle and launches himself off the top rope toward Kofi Kingston, taking him out on the outside of the ring. The Miz knocks Morrison out of the way as Big E goes to attack. Morrison with a big kick to Big E. Big Knee by Morrison as he lands Starship Pain on Big E for the pin and three count.

Winner: John Morrison

Backstage

Jimmy and Jey Uso speaking backstage with Roman Reigns. The Usos joke about the loser’s punishment of eating dog ****. Roman Reigns declares, “I’m gonna break a table and I’m gonna win this match. The question is, are you ready?” as the Usos nod and smile in agreement adding,”Hey Dash, Hey Dawson, Welcome…” as Reigns finishes, “To the Usos penitentiary.”

The Usos vs. The Revival

The six time tag-team champions Jimmy and Jey Uso make their way down the ramp and enter the ring as their music plays over the speakers in the arena. Out next is The Revival’s Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder as they make their way into the ring where The Usos are waiting. The bell rings and the match begins.

A beat down in the corner for Jey Uso by Dawson and Wilder. An elbow to the face of Jey followed by a Leg Drop. Another kickout by Jey Uso at the two count. Dawson frustrated, locks in a Headlock as the crowd begins to chant “You Suck! You Suck!” Finally Jey creates some seperation, Dawson retaliates with a big kick. Jey rocks Dawson before both men tag in their partners. Jimmy smooth as silk with a Samoan Drop. Jimmy launched out to the apron, lands on the apron and climbs to the top landing on Wilder for the two count. Back to their feet, teamwork from The Revival and a quick roll-up on Jimmy. Jimmy kicks out, Wilder looking shocked thinking he had the win in the bag. Uso builds momentum as they both land Super Kicks during the tag as Jey gets in, quick movements and then Jimmy tags back in. Jey goes flying through the ropes onto Dawson as Jimmy climbs to the top rope and with a Frog Splash onto Wilder in the ring for the win.

Winner: The Usos

Backstage

The Revival speak to Kayla backstage and say obviously there arent going to be any changes in the company… The interview is interrupted by sounds of a fight going on down the hall. The camera pans down the hall to where we see an all out brawl with Lacey Evans and company being broken up by referees, pulling Evans away as Sasha Banks is left injured on the ground holding her ankle.

A clip from last weekend where Mandy Rose baked an “I’m Sorry” cake and delivered it to Otis. Then Otis helping Rose during her match as he comes out to the ramp eating the cake and causing a distraction for Rose’s opponent helping her get the win.

Mandy Rose is asked by Sonya Deville, “Do you think maybe Otis would want to be ringside for my match tonight?” to which Rose replies, “I am going to be out there for your match.” Deville continues, “The Otis thing, I get it.” Rose looking confused responds, “He’s such a sweet guy” Deville asks again, “Can you ask him if he will be out there for me tonight? I think if you ask him, he’s gonna say yes.” Mandy Rose looks unsure but agrees to try.

Bayley is shown saying, “If I see her I’m gonna turn her into a stay at home mom.” Sasha Evans says, “Screw Lacey Evans! I been working my butt off making my music video and rising my star.” Bayley replies, “It doesn’t matter if she’s a mom or a marine, if I see her, I’m going to break her ankle, and I’m going to break every bone in her body.”

Both women are interrupted as they are told this is the second week in a row where she was unable to fight in her match. A protest begins, and he continues, “The match has been promoted so it’s happening tonight, otherwise Bayley is taking your place.” Upset, Bayley responds, “I am not putting my title on the line against Lacey, she does not deserve that.” To which it is said, “It’s not a title match, but it is happening next.” as we go to commercial.

Lacey Evans vs. Bayley

Both women make their way to the ring as their music plays in the arena and they hype up to the crowd. Lacey Evans coming out as the Sweet Southern Belle but with the look of a Marine as she enters the ring, seemingly ready for tonight’s match-up. The bell rings and the match begins. Evans dominates to begin the match. Back and forth quick movements between both of these women. Bayley allowed Evans to come out strong and wear herself out. Bayley holds Evans by the hair. Bayley gets a cover on Evans, Evans kicks out at two. Bayley rolled up as she plays to the crowd, kicks out. Evans with a knee to the midsection. Big right hand by Evans followed by a slam into the turnbuckle. Evans gains momentum as she propels herself back into the ring over the top rope. Bayley thrown across the ring as she lands a big kick driving Evans into the turnbuckle. Evans with a Moonsault following a salute, Bayley with a reversal as she throws her knees up. The match moves to the outside of the ring. Evans is driven into the barracaide on the outside of the ring by Bayley.

We come back from the commercial and Bayley continues to dominate over Evans in this match up. A two count pin and Evans kicks out once again. Bayley throws Evans by her hair and Bayley gets a Flying Elbow and another two count pin. The look in Bayley’s eyes she seemingly won the match. Bayley goes to the top rope once again, as the crowd chants, “Bayley! Bayley!” nobody home. Bayley bounces off the rope, going towards Evans, Evans awaiting her as she counters with The Women’s Right on Bayley and the pin for the three count on Bayley.

Winner: Lacey Evans

Backstage

Alyse Ashton welcomes Shorty G speaking on Sheamus and the surprise attack Shorty G received. Sheamus interrupts saying he heard Shorty G squeaking from across the room. Then says he might have to kick Shorty G’s head off his shoulders one more time before patting him on the head. Shorty G Spears Sheamus before they are broken up. Sheamus is left breathing heavy and angry as hell as we go to commercial break.

Backstage

Kayla Braxton speaks to Braun Strowman. Strowman says he’s excited about the Royal Rumble, but says that’s next week. He wants to talk about tonight and Nakamura. He adds he’s this week in Greensboro, next week in Dallas or at the Royal Rumble, he wants his opportunity for the title, any time, any place. Strowman walks away.

Standing in ring, he tells the fans in the arena, Elias says he needs the voice of truth and that WWE stands for Elias says he wrote a song called, “Walking in Greensboro” and he needs them to clap along.

Elias begins to strum as he sings, “I been walking in Greensboro You’ll never guess what I saw…” Elias is interrupted by Nakamura’s music. Sami Zayn begins, “Please, Please, Elias I am sorry to interrupt your song, and what I have to say is far more important. So for those that want to sing along and clap along, he needs them to shut up. Strowman wants a shot at the Intercontinental Championship. This man does not back down from a fight, not any time, not any place. You want an answer, you have one.”

Zane continues, “Absolutely not. Let me tell you something you stupid stupid oaf. You have no room to call shots around here. I do, we do. Royal Rumble is nine days away, let me remind you, you are looking at a man that actually won the Royal Rumble match, so let this not only be a message to Braun Strowman and every member of the WWE roster, you are being put on notice. Now, I’ve made my point, you go back to… whatever it is you do there.”

Elias says, “Actually Sami, before you go. While I was listening to what you had to say up there, I was actually multi-tasking. It’s called “Sami Zayn needs to shut his damn mouth. If youd like to sing along the chorus is Shinske sucks!”

Zayn yells, “Stop! Everyone stop. Shut your mouth right now. How dare you? You think that’s funny? Hey Cesaro, lets show him what we do to people who think they’re funny around here.” Cesaro runs and slides into the ring. Elias struggles out of his guitar and fights back, Nakamura and Zayn entering the ring making it three on one against Elias. Braun Strowman’s music sounds as he comes down to the aid of Elias, Clotheslining all three of the men out of the ring over the top rope. They make their way backwards up the ramp as Strowman stands in the ring.

A Celebration of the life of the Soul Man, Rocky Johnson (1944-2020) who debuted in 1964. A clip is shown. As we come back to the arena, we hear the crowd chanting, “Rocky! Rocky! Rocky!” as we go to commercial.

Sonya Deville vs. Alexa Bliss w/ Nikki Cross

We come back from commercial where Sonya Deville is waiting in the ring. Alexa Bliss accompanied by Nikki Cross makes her way down the ramp as her pyro goes off at the top of the stage and her music plays over the speakers in the arena. Bliss begins yelling at Deville. Before anything can begin, Otis walks out and stands on the ramp. The bell rings and the match begins.

Deville gets a quick two count cover on Bliss to start the match off. Deville grabs Bliss in a Headlock, Bliss takes her down with a Drop Toe Hold. Open head strike by Bliss followed by multiple kicks to the midsection in the corner. Deville shoves Cross from behind who is caught mid-air by Otis Bliss grabs Deville and rolls her up for the three count pin.

Winner: Alexa Bliss

A recap of earlier tonight with Daniel Bryan and The Fiend Bray Wyatt as the Strap Match is officially announced.

Backstage

Robert Roode is shown standing backstage as King Corbin and Dolph Ziggler walk up to him. Both men say they will get revenge on Roman Reigns for what he did to Roode a few weeks ago. King Corbin says he Roode has to win tonight’s match so Corbin can choose the stipulation.

Tables Match
Roman Reigns vs. Robert Roode

It is declared there is no winning by submissions, disqualifications, pin-falls, or count-outs… only way to win is putting your opponent through a table. Out first is Roman Reigns as his music sounds in the Greensboro, NC arena. Reigns begins to make his way down the ramp as he is attacked from behind by Robert Roode. The bell rings as the fight continues on the outside of the ring. Reigns’s head is bounced off the stairs on the outside of the ring. Reigns counters and gets the upperhand, removing the cover from the announcer’s table. Reigns grabs Roode to pull him towards the announcer’s table and Roode counters, driving the shoulder of Reigns into the ring post. Reigns takes out Roode. Lots of fast paced action early on in this match up. Reigns runs around the ring and runs through the barricade as Roode side steps him. King Corbin’s music sounds in the arena as Reigns is seen holding his shoulder, seemingly hurting it once again. King Corbin is shown sitting on his thrown at the top of the stage as we go to commercial.

As we come back from commercial, Roode is attempting to go for a Superplex on Reigns from the top turnbuckle onto the table in ring. Reigns counters, looking for the Power Bomb through the table. Roode going for DDT through the table. Reigns attempts Samoan Drop. Finally Roode ends up on the outside of the ring, crawling on his knees at ringside. Reigns lifts the table and lines it up in the corner of the ring against the turnbuckle. King Corbin is seen standing at the top of the ramp shouting, “No!” Reigns comes to the outside and peeks around the ring post followed by a Superman Punch on Roode. Roode is right in front of the table as Reigns howls, Corbin distracts Reigns long enough for Dolph Ziggler to jump in. Ziggler trying to put Reigns on the announcer’s table as the Usos come running down the ramp. The Usos go into the ring and fly through the ropes onto Ziggler. Both Usos get a Double Uso splash onto Ziggler as Reigns Spears Roode through the table he set up in the corner of the ring.

Winner: Roman Reigns

After the Match

King Corbin visibly upset as he shouts, “No!” grabbing his head with both hands in shock watching as Reigns celebrates.

Reigns says, “The Royal Rumble is in a baseball stadium, and I’m going to kick your ass all over it. Oh, and the stipulation, its a Falls Count Anywhere match.” as the show ends.
