As noted, Vince McMahon faced WWE investors during a conference call on Thursday for the WWE Second Quarter 2019 Results. During the call, the WWE Chairman faced some tough questions and gave some classic Vince McMahon-style answers.
When asked about the promotions of Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff to the roles of Executive Directors of RAW and SmackDown LIVE, McMahon spoke about it freeing him up to focus on the big picture issues related to the company, as opposed to dealing with the “blinders” that comes with handling the creative for the weekly television shows / WWE story lines.
“It allows me to have a broader view of things and an escape from getting in the weeds,” McMahon said about the subject during Thursday’s conference call.
He also spoke about the future of the RAW and SmackDown LIVE brands and how the company plans to make them “edgier,” while remaining under the PG-rated umbrella.
“We’re going to be edgier, but remain in the PG environment,” McMahon said.
Interestingly enough, this lead to McMahon indirectly referencing new competitors in the pro wrestling landscape — All Elite Wrestling (AEW).
Although he didn’t specifically identify AEW by name, he did mention that he can’t imagine “the competition” would continue with “blood and guts and gory things,” noting he doesn’t feel TNT executives would be thrilled with such a decision / company strategy.
